My parents, Susan and Stanley Darer, have passed, but I felt their presence strongly as I wrote this book. They instilled values of curiosity and empathy, of citizenship and service, and they impressed upon me that the United States exists as part of a wider world. Whatever I have achieved in life is built on absorbing their values, and those of my ancestors. In Hebrew we say: L’Dor v’dor—from generation to generation.
Last, and certainly not least, thank you, dear readers. As a political writer I’ve been bombarded by hate speech, which can make it hard to be brave. Your letters and emails give me the strength and courage to keep going. Stella is right: It can’t happen without you.
