Between Faith and Fear

With a hand to her heart, Mary took a step toward him and stopped. Herb stared open-mouthed behind her, unable to move at all.
Melanie and Danny observed the poignant reunion from the sidelines, ready to act if anyone should fall to the floor.
Derek slowly closed the gap between him and his mother. “Mom,” he whispered, reaching out.
The woman flinched, gasped when she felt his very real hands close over her arms. “Derek?” she said in a wobbly voice. “My boy?” Then she reached up to touch his face, but her eyes clouded, crossed.
“She’s gone,” Danny said and rushed to help as Mary collapsed against him. Derek caught her and slowly sank to the floor under her weight. Melanie knew his wounds had to be hurting him, but he held Mary firmly in his arms while he met his father’s shocked gaze.
“Pop,” he said brokenly.
Herb gripped the table for support.
“I’m home.”

TRUTH AND HUMILITY
Austin heard a loud whistle from behind. He turned, did a double take.
“Holy shit.”
Danny was marching toward him through the dirt and dust in cut-off shorts and the same pink shirt she’d worn the night before. Her work boots had been hastily donned, the tops flared open, shoelaces untied. Her hair was messy, and as she approached, he could sense every thought going through every man’s head that watched.
Tools were dropped, mouths fell open, work came to a screeching halt. Danny Bennett, in all her tumbled, furious glory emanated raw sex appeal in an environment of testosterone-crazed fools.
What the hell was she thinking?
Once he closed his mouth, Austin jumped from the trailer and turned to face her. Her fist impacted painfully with his jaw. It took him a precious moment to recover from the shocking thunk between his ears, but when he was finally about to, he was treated to another one.
Did she really just hit him? Twice? Sympathetic “ooh’s” trickled through the yard indicating she had.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
J. A. Dennam, an award winning author and member of Romance Writers of America, resides in a small Kansas town with her husband and four children. Besides her great love for literary arts, her passions include fine art, culinary art and music.
Storytelling has always been a part of her life, used as an effective tool to combat insomnia as a child. As an adult, the need to purge her private stories demanded she put them in print. Her fascination with romance, fast cars and adventure films is what structures her stories today, making Romantic Suspense the genre she was simply born to write.
For over twenty years, Ms. Dennam has been building her career as a painter of Western portraiture. In the meantime, however, she managed to complete three novels. The recent decision to forgo her fine art career in lieu of her writing career was a simple one. Her passion for writing far outshines all other passions and she has only just begun to build her list of achievements by entering writing contests, joining writer’s groups and gaining an impressive number of positive reviews for her books.
Ms. Dennam is represented by Marisa A. Corvisiero, Esq.
