Clinical Judgements Page 44

by Claire Rayner

It must be nice, thinks the girl in the third row who has been having treatment for a twisted spine and who is still wearing a big plaster jacket designed to give her back a chance to grow straight, it must be nice to be one of them. All these good-looking young men and the nurses, ever so pretty some of them in their uniforms. Not the fat ones whose uniforms don’t fit, or the lanky ones who look so droopy, but the pretty ones, it must be nice to be them. And she imagines being one of them one day, and how nice it will be. Nothing to worry about but helping people be comfortable and everyone thinking you are marvellous.

It would be nice to be a nurse, she decides. And one day I will be. Nothing to worry about, just being nice to people. Lovely.
