The kiss intensified. Fire ignited and rolled inside her core. Her hands sank under his open overcoat, and their bodies shared each other’s radiating heat while surrounded by chilled mountain air. He groaned into her open-mouthed wanton kiss. He plunged his tongue in. She mewled. Honks of passing cars added their own echoing noise. “Get a room!”
The kiss finally broke. They shared a chuckle.
Paige brushed his road-sludge-stained coat. “I missed this. It’s only been hours, but I missed this,” she said as she took in a deep heady breath, her exhale condensing in the cold air.
“My coat? It’s yours.” There it was, his melt-you, warm smile and laugh.
She had no words, just her own soft laugh.
“Oh, my sweet Paige, my sweet fleeing Paige. Any chance you can stop running or, in today’s case, fishtailing away? Let’s turn around.”
She moved to do so, shifting her stance in his arms so that she faced the road.
He laughed harder. “No. Your car. Turn around and follow me. Let’s get off this road. I’ll get you to your aunt’s safely. I started out as a process engineer, after all.”
He opened her car door for her. Her lips brushed his cheek before she sat. After belting herself in, she said through the half-open driver’s side window, “Engineer, huh? Then you’re in a heap of trouble. One of my brothers is an engineer, and I have plenty of engineering jokes at the ready.”
Michael’s eyebrow shot up. “Oh, well, I have lots of unemployed jokes, but…” He paused for effect. “None of them work.” He laughed.
She groaned and couldn’t close the window fast enough but found herself laughing, too.
“Not a good one?” he asked through the frosty window.
She pretended not to hear, shrugging. As he returned to his car, she said, “The joke was just meh, but you, Mr. Groundhog Man, are definitely incredible.”
“Thanks.” The voice came from somewhere vaguely under the seat.
“Hey. You weren’t supposed to hear that.” Paige shouted to her phone somewhere on the floor of her car.
“Remember to follow me,” his voice still came through the lost phone.
“Do you always have to lead?” Paige asked, fumbling through the possessions littering the floorboard for her phone.
“Definitely not.”
“Good, because if you do, it’s going to be hard to be a strong-willed, self-assured, got-it-together Southern girl.”
“You forgot to mention bright, hot, impetuous, funny-dressing…”
She finally grabbed her phone and turned it off. There would be plenty of time for quips later. She savored the most welcome thought. There would be a later with Michael. He was no rebound. He was the real thing. Her very own Groundhog Man.
Paige’s car swerved slightly as she turned around to follow him. It was an action befitting her state. She’d swerved from her life path, but if that kiss and those nights together were any sign, it was a detour worth taking. She was turning a new leaf, a new mission, a new place to live, and unexpectedly with it, a new man. She couldn’t be happier.
She fishtailed her way to a new start. If Groundhog Man was any indication, it was going to be a jaw-dropping ride.
