Zombie Revolution Page 30

Damon heard Victoria's soft footsteps, and then soft hands covered his eyes. “Guess who.” She whispered into his ear. Her lips brushed his lobe when she spoke.

He thought for a moment. “Tina. Mary. No Elizabeth.” He joked and pulled her hands off his face and tugged her onto his lap. “Oops, my mistake.” He flashed a white smile.

She pretended to be hurt and stuck out her glorious bottom lip and looked at him with her big dark green eyes pouting. He leaned in and kissed her soft lips. After a few moments they sat silently side by side staring out over the safe zone he created. Damon smiled. “I never thought I would get this far.”

“Me either.” She agreed. Her mind thinking about where she was before she found Damon. “It was a long road to get here.” Damon nodded his head. “But as long as I have you, I'll be okay.”

Victoria sank into his arms. “There's nowhere else I'd rather be.” The rooftop door opened and Chloe's head popped out. “Time for dinner. Hurry everyone's here.” The teenager disappeared with the metal door clanking behind her.

Damon let Victoria up and followed her down the stairs and into the dining area. Victoria had set up some decorations to make it have a homier feel. They didn't call it the mess hall anymore...unless Harper was eating with them. He stepped through the arch and saw Riley sitting next to Kya and Harper and Liz down from them. Chloe and Tyler sat across from the big marine and the busty blonde. Damon took the seat at the head of the table with Victoria to his right.

As they ate their mixed matched cuisine Damon smiled. He felt like he was home, at a new home, with a new family. No longer did he feel empty and depressed. As far as Damon was concerned this was the only way to live in Zombie America.

Chloe stopped chewing her food and looked up. “So I was thinking about my birthday. I want to have a really big party.” It was amazing to Damon how fast she was starting to act like a teenager again. The human spirit was so resilient. “Always with the parties...”

Damon sighed. It was going to be the teen’s fourteenth. “Whatever you want, Chloe.”

“I got an early birthday present for you, Chloe.” Riley smiled and pulled something out from under the table.

“Oh yeppie!” The teen squealed. At least until she saw what it was. How did he find it?

The tall marine was holding a certain DVD that he swore he would find one day. “The TV’s in the other room.” “Oh thanks…” Damon and Harper snorted.

“Come on, it’s a classic!” Riley defended.

“Don’t worry, Sweetie. We’ll get you something much nicer.” Liz promised. She smiled and went back to eating. Suddenly, she pointed her fork at nobody in particular. “Oh did you hear about the safe zone on Alcatraz?” After everyone shook their heads she continued. “It got taken over. Some people say there is this weird group of religious phonies who get in and turn everyone against the leaders of the safe area and get the people to follow them instead and make them do like crazy rituals and stuff. ”

“Interesting...” Damon said pondering if the story was true. He didn’t know if he cared. The thought of other safe areas still intrigued him. Maybe one day he would try to contact one of them, but now he had more important things to think about like: taking the police station, getting the Silverado back and apparently planning a birthday party.

The teenager looked up at the ceiling. “I wonder if they would come here.” She stroked her long ponytail. “I mean if they took over one why not another?”

“They'd be stupid if they did.” Riley responded, his blue eyes piercing. “It would be the last thing they did. Am I right, Chloe?” He winked.

“We'd be ready for them.” Harper corroborated, squeezing Liz’s hand. He shrugged his thick shoulders nonchalantly. “I mean it would be pretty easy to spot.”

Damon didn't know if the wackjobs would come or not, but there was one thing he was sure of. They would stand together and endure the storm like the strong immovable Rockies. To Damon there was only one option. They would survive this zombie revolution that had transformed the once successful and bustling nation to the new and less improved Zombie America.
