To his astonishment, Larry Jessup had stood and began to applaud him the moment he finished. It didn’t take long before all of them were on their feet clapping in admiration for what their Deputy had done for everyone involved. Many townsfolk voiced their amazement that he was able to keep it secret for so many years.
Daniel had responded that he’d prayed constantly for a solution, and the Lord had decided it was time to bring his suffering to an end. The applause resumed, more hearty and thunderous than before.
Her husband came into the parlor at that moment, and the memory of the occasion faded.
“Merry Christmas, my darling husband.” Yes, she’d intended her joy to come through.
“And a Merry Christmas to you, my beautiful bride.” His face was beaming as if lit from within by a hundred suns.
“I have something for you.” She reached behind her back and pulled out a gift wrapped with tissue paper. “I hope you like it.”
“You don’t have to give me a gift, Louise. I already have the greatest riches a man could hope for. I have you and a son to cherish forever.”
“Unwrap it, please. I can’t wait any longer.”
He did as she asked, and his face contorted in confusion. “I don’t think this will fit me.”
She couldn’t hold back the giggle. “It’s not for you. It’s for our child.”
Understanding dawned on him. “Are you serious? Are you sure?” She could only nod her head. “This is the best news I’ve ever heard!”
“Yay! I’m gonna be a big brother!” They turned to see Dylan in the doorway jumping joyously.
