“I’m…dy losing you…I’ll try to kee…casting even if I don’t …response from you.” The crackling in between Moore’s words was louder than the man by far. Carsten listened intently for another word from Moore, but as the minutes spun out, nothing came.
He was still listening when he sent Westhall and Pearcy, the last two agents with him, down the rope without harnesses—he just had the men wrap the rope around and across their bodies, to brake their descents. They trained for this kind of emergency rappel, so it wasn’t a new skill for either man.
“Nothing yet, sir.” Westhall said, just a hundred feet below the edge of the scar in the ground, where Carsten could still see him.
Carsten watched as first Pearcy’s and then Westhall’s heads disappeared into the darkness, the beam from their head-mounted spotlights only making a feeble attack on the murky blackness. “Keep talking until I lose you. The second you can’t hear me reply, Westhall comes back up.”
“Rog…ting to break up now. I’ll com…ve reached …ottom. There’s a mist…the ground. I’m…”
Cartsen waited. Then he waited some more.
Westhall’s transmission had died.
Carsten cursed silently, waiting for Westhall to start his ascent back up the rope, and re-establish radio contact. Maybe they could make a human daisy chain with the radios somehow. The Inuit woman looked over the edge of the crevasse next to him. He glanced at her face and saw exactly what he didn’t want to see. Resignation. The woman thought they were all dead.
He looked down again into the darkness waiting for Westhall to come back up. For the fortieth time that week, he wished that Abigail Gaffin, the young and energetic First Lady of the United States, and his charge, had not insisted on a cultural tour of a God-damned glacier in the middle of Greenland on her way back from Denmark. That fawning fool of a cultural minister Auring, had impressed upon her how “lovely” the ice was this time of year, and that had been all it had taken. After that, Mrs. Gaffin had not stopped talking about visiting a glacier.
Carsten had objected repeatedly to the last minute change of plan, but Abby Gaffin was as stubborn as she was energetic, and she was used to getting her way. He had guessed that a red head First Lady was going to be trouble for the Secret Service, and she had proved him right from her first day in the residence. The seconds were ticking away in Carsten’s head as he strained to see something in the depths of the cavernous opening.
No word from Pearcy. And Westhall hadn’t come back up.
One helicopter pilot, five Secret Service agents, and the President’s wife, all gone in under ten minutes. Carsten stood up from where he had been bent over the edge, and looked at Mrs. Petersen. She only echoed the tragedy in her dark eyes. He turned and started walking toward the helicopter and its long-range radio.
He was going to need more bodies to throw into the abyss.
