More tears flooded her eyes. “But I want you, damn it! I want you with me, Robert. We’ve just found this… this bright spot in a world that’s been gloomy as hell for months. I’m not ready to lose it.”
He rubbed the tears away with is thumbs. “I’m not sure I can be what you need me to be, Katy. I’ve been on my own for a couple of years. Gotten kind of used to doing things my way.”
“You can do things your way,” she said quickly, her voice almost pleading. “I don’t need to be the boss. What if we worked together? Partners might be fun, eh?”
“Fun.” An image of his beautiful Denise, riding a carousel at a fair, flashed into his mind. Laughter, as he tried to snap a clear picture of her while the horses went round and round. “It’s been so long, I’d forgotten about fun.”
She swiped at her face again. “I don’t know what we’ll face in D.C. Lakeesha Laughlin is a tough opponent. Most likely, we’ll have a battle on our hands. But talking to Ray, I think there might be more people on our side than we realize. I have to try this, Robert. Don’t you see? I have to try and get our lives back. It won’t be the same, I realize. But it might be good in a new way. Even fun.”
He closed his eyes. When he opened them again, her beautiful, longing expression made the decision easier for him. But he had to try one last time. “You might get killed.”
“I could be killed staying here. It’s a chance I have to take. My odds will be better if you’re with me.”
He tried not to smile—tried to remain gruff. “I might kill you myself, you crazy wench.”
A slow smile spread across Katy’s face. “The French have an expression, La petite mort. It means ‘the little death’. It’s a euphemism for orgasm. You can kill me any time you want.”
Sounds good to me. “D.C., you say.” He cocked his head at her. “What the hell. Could be fun.”
Katy beamed before dragging his face to hers for a long, wet kiss.
About the Author
Jenna Byrnes could use more cabinet space and more hours in a day. She’d fill the kitchen with gadgets her husband purchases off TV and let him cook for her to his heart’s content. She’d breeze through the days adding hours of sleep, and more time for writing the hot, erotic romance she loves to read.
Jenna thinks everyone deserves a happy ending, and loves to provide as many of those as possible to her gay, lesbian and hetero characters. Her favorite quote, from a pro-gay billboard, is “Be careful who you hate. It may be someone you love.”
