“She’s a hard worker. Although I still wish you’d come aboard.”
“I can’t. You understand it, don’t you? Too many people. The mental strain of keeping those visions away would be just too much work. Besides, I enjoy my time at the newspaper. Editor in chief keeps me busy.” Janelle replied.
“I know. I understand. I still would love to see your beautiful face at work.”
Janelle could feel herself blushing. He took her by the hand, leading her through the main hub of the center, before stopping just in front of the doors.
“Alright. Ready?” He asked.
Janelle nodded, nervous even though she wasn’t even speaking. The doors opened and she took her place off to the side, watching Jake speak first, looking out at the crowd. There was way more people then Janelle thought would show up. It was as though all of St. Neuri was interested in the community center.
She was glad that she didn’t have to worry about a speech. Even with plenty of werewolves in the crowd, there were enough people that Janelle knew a vision could topple her over at any moment. That was the last thing she wanted.
That meant Janelle couldn’t focus too much on the speeches. Jake’s speech seemed to go off without a hitch – he spoke about bringing a new chapter to St. Neuri, about giving back to the community, making things better for everyone living here.
Cheryl dove more into detail about the center and what help it would offer. She looked poised and regal. Watching her speak, it struck Janelle as silly that her friend ever thought she could go anywhere else. It was evident that St. Neuri was in her blood.
In the crowd, Janelle could see Millie, Liam, Sarah and Logan. They had all formed a close-knit group over the past few years.
It was strange, Janelle thought, how much life changed since meeting Jake. Everything went upside down – but it was for the best. With the love of her life by her side, her world finally made sense.
Afterwards, the community center officially opened, holding a party and tours for the people of St. Neuri to see the building. Cheryl was busy going around, chatting people up, mingling and making new connections. Millie and Liam walked around, talking in low voices. From here, Janelle could see the flash of an engagement ring on her finger. The vision had come true.
Sarah and Logan were out back, looking at the garden area. Janelle hovered in the back, looking for Jake. She didn’t feel lonely, however, enjoying the peace after a busy morning.
Lost in thought, she didn’t hear Jake approach. He touched her arm gingerly, looking down at her. “You okay? Any visions?”
“I’m fine.” She said, “Promise. Just admiring how the center is finally open. It’s been a long road.”
“Something I couldn’t have done without you. Could you come with me?” He asked suddenly, taking her by the hand.
Surprised, she trailed after him, cutting through the crowd, down the hallway and into one of the meeting rooms. It closed behind them, blocking the party out.
“Janelle, we’ve spent three years together.” Jake said without preamble and Janelle suddenly found herself preparing for the worst. “They’ve been great. Amazing.”
“Are you breaking up with me?” She blurted out, her fear getting the best of her.
Jake blinked in surprise. “What? No! Why would I do that?”
“I don’t know. Your speech…pulling me to the side…”
He took her hands, looking at her seriously now. “Janelle, I am not dumping you. I wanted to ask you something.”
“What?”
Suddenly, Jake dropped to one knee. Janelle’s heart swooped as she stared at him in shock, watching as he pulled out a ring case, opening it up to expose a glittering diamond.
“Will you marry me?”
She could only stare in shock at the sudden turn of events. Janelle hadn’t thought she would ever come this far with a reclusive billionaire werewolf. Now, they were helping St. Neuri and each other – and he wanted more of her. He wanted to take things to the next level.
“Jake…” She trailed off, still in shock.
“I love you, Janelle. More and more each day. I want to spend my life with you. You make me a better man. I adore everything about you. I hope you feel the same.” He said, staring up at her. “I know this seems random. I’ve had the ring in my pocket for a few weeks now, wanting the right moment. But today, finishing the community center and seeing how far we have come, I wanted it to be now.”
Janelle broke out in a bright smile, “Yes. Of course, Jake.”
He returned the smile, slipping the ring on her finger. It was gorgeous – but no match for the kiss that followed or the happiness blazing in her chest. Jake tasted familiar but still new, exciting and safe. From the first moment he came into the newspaper, acting like a snobby rich kid, she knew deep down, there was something different about him. How happy was she that she took the time to figure out what!
They had overcome so much and were going into the next journey together. There was no telling what the future would hold. But Janelle knew as long as it was with Jake, she would be happy.
The kiss broke and she gazed up at him, the man she loved, the werewolf she understood. Happiness seemed to make her feel as if she was floating on a cloud. Life was where it should be – how it was meant to be.
“Come on,” She said happily, “Let’s go.”
Jake took her by the hand. Together, they walked out into the room and into their future.
The End.
