Magis Page 22

She shook her head. “You’ve just been playing around the edges. It’s not your fault,” she hurried to say when I frowned. “There hasn’t been any need for you to accept the full force of your power until now.” She grinned, her small teeth yellow in the moonlight. “I’m so proud of you, Glynnie.”

I looked away, guilt and fear making my heart beat faster in my chest. “Don’t be proud, I don’t have a clue what I’m doing.”

She returned to her knitting. “You will.”

She seemed so sure that it made me want to yell at her. I couldn’t possibly live up to all that confidence. “I have no idea where we go from here. There is no portal to protect anymore. And I dragged all my friends here, to Outvald. We don’t know how to live here. And there are monsters roaming around.” My fingers must have dug too deeply into the little cat’s fur because he jumped off my lap and returned to his favorite perch in the tree. “Everybody’s going to expect me to tell them what to do, and I…”

Grams clucked her tongue with displeasure. “Child, no one knows the right thing to do all the time. You’re a smart girl. You’ll figure it all out.”

I thought about it for a minute and then sighed. “Yeah. I’ll figure something out.”

“You’re not alone, child,” Grams told me. “You have your friends.” She reached a gnarled hand to clasp mine. “You have me.”

Her words filled me with warmth and made me finally smile. “I do?”

“Of course,” she said. “I won’t leave you to cope all by yourself.”

“You know about this place?” I flopped a hand to indicate Outvald.

  “I do.”

  “I have so many questions.”

“There will be time enough for that tomorrow, child. Get some rest tonight. Tomorrow will be a new day.”

I rested my head against the back of the chair, closing my eyes as I nodded in agreement. I don’t know the exact moment when Grams left me. I might have drifted off for a moment or sixty. But my dreams were calm, and my nerves were soothed.

I would tackle my new challenges tomorrow. In the meantime, everyone I loved was there, safe and sound. I fully relaxed for the first time since coming through the portal to Outvald, and let Victoria’s welcoming magic wrap around me, lulling me back to sleep.
