Quinn chuckled and followed her to the door. He caught her from behind and held her against him. “I do love you, Priss, more than you’ll ever know. I don’t want to lose you again. Will you marry me?”

She glanced over her shoulder at him. Tears ran freely down her cheeks. “Yes. Yes, I will. On one condition.”

  “What’s that?”

“Never again will I be anything other than who and what I am. I’ll also stand up for myself and refuse to do anything I don’t want to do. Do you still want me on those terms?”

“Yes, ma’am.” He turned her in his arms and kissed her, a long, slow kiss filled with promises for all the tomorrows to come. “I regret not taking care of you years ago. I promise to do better. I love you, Priss. You can do whatever you want, be whatever you want, and I’ll still love you. I’ll do everything in my power to make you happy.”

The following morning at the breakfast table, Priscilla cleared the emotion from her throat. “Luka, Quinn has asked me to marry him. I said yes. So we won’t be going back to New Orleans.”

“Really? That’s great.” The boy filled a glass with orange juice and drank it all.

  “There’s something else, Luka.”

He spread strawberry jam on a piece of toast. “What’s that?”

“Quinn is your father.” Priscilla watched him, waiting for his reaction.

Her son looked from Quinn to her. “My dad is a cowboy?” He leapt from his chair and raced out the front door. “Wait until I text my friends. They are going to be so jealous.”

“Well, that was much easier than I expected it would be.” Priscilla lifted her cup of coffee and drank.

Buck came in the front door, carrying an envelope. “Priscilla, an express letter came for you. It’s from an Almod Gold.”

Her gaze jerked to Quinn. “How in the world did he find me here?”

“I imagine he has more informants than the FBI,” Quinn said, refilling his coffee mug.

Priscilla took the envelope from Buck. When she started to open it, Quinn stopped her. “You don’t think that’s going to cause the room to spin and the floor to drop so that you end up back in New Orleans?”

She laughed. “No, I don’t think that will happen.” She opened the letter and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

Ms. Tegula, in investigating your father’s assets, I learned he seized everything your late husband left you. Those items are herewith returned to you as your sole and separate property. Due to Claudius’s numerous investments and partnerships in multiple oil wells and off-shore drilling rigs, you are now quite wealthy. A sum far less than what Claudius left you brings with it the title of heiress. Contact my secretary on your return to New Orleans for a list of your extensive holdings. In addition, there are a number of documents requiring your signature to finalize the transfer to you. As part of Amadeus’s punishment for his treacherous deeds, he has forfeited all his assets, which I have taken the liberty of liquidating. Enclosed is a cashier’s check for his property. Yours truly, Almod Gold.

“Nothing will make up for all the evil things Amadeus did,” Priscilla said. She wished she had gone to Almod Gold years ago.

“I imagine Almod Gold has found a way to limit the misery Amadeus can cause others.”

Tears filled her eyes. “When I think of what he intended to do to Luka—”

“Don’t think about that,” Quinn said, his voice gruff. “He can’t hurt you or our son.”

Priss pulled the check from the envelope. She frowned then began to laugh as she pushed the check across the table to Quinn. “Will you still marry me now that I’m filthy rich?”

  He choked on his coffee.

Buck moved behind Quinn to whack him on the back. “The cattle don’t care if you’ve got money or not. You still put your pants on, pardon me saying so, ma’am, one leg at a time.”

Looking like he was going to lose his breakfast, Quinn asked, “Are you going to wear a tiara and want to build some grand house now?”

Priscilla shook her head. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to be myself and wear jeans and a T-shirt. I like things here just as they are. I’m surrounded by people who love me just as I am. In my book, that makes me rich. The only other thing I want to make my life complete is a few more cubs. How would you feel about that?”

“I don’t think I’m needed for this conversation.” Buck headed out the front door, chuckling. “Me and the boy are going fishing. We’ll be gone ’til at least noon.”

“We’d better get started making those babies.” Quinn pulled her from the chair and kissed her. “I can’t wait to see your stomach swell with my cub. I missed out last time. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. So how many are you wanting?”

“Let’s start with one and see how that goes.” She wanted more than one, but worried about Quinn. “Do you really want another child? I don’t want to tie you down.”

“Having you here with Luka has been incredible. There’s nothing I’d love more than to fill every room in this empty house with our cubs.”

Priscilla kissed him. Her tongue dueled with his.

He lifted her into his arms and carried her to his room, breaking the kiss to kick the door shut. “Have I told you yet today how much I love you?”

“Yes, you have. Tell me again after we make love.”

  And he did.
