I wrote this book for my dead. The men and women who helped to make me who I am today. Who, however intimately I knew them, have passed on something of themselves to me. Some of them were family members, others friends whose paths I was lucky to cross: all form part of the long chain of those who have gone and taken a part of me with them. If I may, let me say their names: Mathias Cousin, Jean-Yves Dubois, Simone Gaudé, Serge Gaudé, Lino Fusco, Hubert Gignoux. I hope this book gives them pleasure. What is written here is alive there.
