Heimdallr ran across the room and found the matte-black helmet he was looking for. As soon as he wore it, the helmet started to hum strongly but inaudibly, such that Heimdallr could barely feel it even on the hair near his jowls. A rubbery, translucent liquid oozed out of the edges of the helmet and solidified instantly to completely encase Heimdallr’s head, only leaving out two slits for his eyes and a large hole for his nose and mouth. The helmet was old but extremely effective – a sustained electromagnetic wave generator that disabled the electric signals of the brain lattice.

He slumped to the floor and sighed in relief. He licked the sweat near his lips and breathed heavily. He was now completely untraceable and realised that he had to stay in hiding indefinitely until he knew it was safe to go out. However, the only thought that kept nudging him was the fact that even Nanna didn’t know about the location of his safehouse. He was completely on his own.

Heimdallr checked his wristband instinctively and noticed a State news flash. The report was only restricted to top members of the government, himself included at this moment. Due to a strange astronomical anomaly, the planet of Jargantaam had been completely obliterated. Heimdallr gasped loudly. It further said that the blast hadn’t been caused by any known technology. There were reports of space-time distortion around the massive icy planet that shook it from within, which had caused extraordinary tectonic activity and exploded the planet from within.

The bad news was that most theories behind such an event pointed at a possible attempt of intervention by the four- dimensional Gods. Heimdallr felt a chill run down his spine just trying to comprehend the raw power that was enough to crack open planets. Such power that was definitely coming for Asr-Gawa with vengeance.

The good news was that the thermal barrier around Asr-Gawa, meant to protect the city from a Jargantaan invasion, had been finally taken down for the first time ever since Asr-Gawa had recovered from the dark and horrific days of Jargantaan terror. In Heimdallr’s absence the order to terminate the thermal barrier had been given by his deputy. Heimdallr smiled inwardly as he realised this move would save them immense amounts of Makto for the coming days. Makto they would most certainly need for the impending four-dimensional invasion.

  Epilogue

  Earth, Alexandria

March 16, 2017, Friday, 2130 hours Earth EET

Slowly the level of water started receding. The cavernous chamber under the famous ancient site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria was full of debris of the teleporter and the bodies of humans and Jargantaans. The lowering of the water also released a stench of burned flesh and of hot metal. As the water receded some more, a strange sight would have greeted anybody who would have beheld it. Except nobody was there. Nobody but one.

The water contained a bubble—large enough to hold a human—and inside the bubble there was someone who was squatting uncomfortably presumably for a long time. He held the Chiemsee cauldron in his hand and the cauldron emitted a curious aura. The aura held the bubble of air in place inside the water and helped the man survive the might of the water. Gradually the cauldron seemed to have sucked the water dry – with presumably no outlet. The awesome power of the cauldron was accentuated by a red light coming from a stone embedded in the cauldron at one corner. The stone was normally indiscernible to the naked eye blending perfectly with the general design of the cauldron’s sides.

The man stretched and stood up when the level of the water was sufficiently down. He got out of the bubble with some difficulty as his limbs were not as supple as they once were. He looked old and haggard, but moved with a certainty and resolve which signified a personality that defied difficulties.

The man who was called the Technician by the Japanese shook the cauldron dry, and then with a lot of effort moved away from the corpses. He just paused briefly near the corpse of an even older man, General Kiyoshi, and looked at the dead man with an inscrutable expression. His tormentor of old, always reminding him of the painful past in which the Japanese shield played a big part, had been the chief obstacle for him to return to his native dimension. Now that the obstacle was removed on its own, there was nothing standing in his path to stop him from returning, not even his own commitment which he valued much more than anything else.

He pondered for a moment, thinking about the blond- haired boy he had pushed into the teleporter, the boy who was wielding the Hammer with such energy and authority and he could not help but smile. His life and sacrifice had not been futile after all.

Time to return to Asr-Gawa, thought the old Thor, wielder of the Hammer of yore in Asr-Gawa. The thought of this native land he had to leave and go back to Japan to honour his commitment for returning the swords of Kusanagi, started a new found desire to rediscover his life and his place, and with the Chiemsee cauldron and the Brainstone fragment that he had in his possession, he knew exactly how to achieve that.
