Investigating Julius Drake Page 21

My ears heated. “Yeah. I guess. If you want to.”

“Really?” Julius’s eyes sparkled. “That’s very nineteen fifties of you, Henry. But I accept.”

I stuck my hand in my pocket so I wouldn’t bite my nails. “Awesome.”

Julius opened the door to the hallway, and we headed out. When we got to the driveway, I pulled my bike from the wall and kicked over it. “So, are we together now? Like a couple?” Butterflies batted around in my belly.

Julius blinked. “I thought we always were. Have we not been?”

The working of his mind was so incomprehensible that I smiled. “Yeah, we were. And we are.”

“Good.” Julius got on his bike and pushed until it lined up with mine.

I leaned toward him, stretching to kiss him. This time, I moved my lips for real, opening them enough to taste his tongue.

When I finished, I must have been wearing a huge grin.

Julius watched me, his gaze intent. “You think you’re pretty badass, don’t you?”

  “Yeah.” I sure did.

He smirked, then reached for the back of my head and wound his fingers in my hair. When he kissed me, it was nothing like my tentative attempts. His mouth was wide open, and his tongue passed boldly over my lips. He kissed like he’d eat my face.

Eventually, I pulled away. “Okay.” I put a hand on his chest, my face on fire and my ears ringing.

“You’re cute.” Julius snickered and pedaled up the hill.

My heart flipped over. “Wait up!” I called, as I rushed to catch up. The sun was starting to set as we coasted down the hill, and the city glowed with lights and the promise of adventure.

I couldn’t wait to find out where Julius would take me next.
