As it turned out, though, even the best laid plans can sometimes go awry, because when Hunter walked in and saw Rain waiting for him in a crimson red dress that hugged every single curve just right, he knew his plans were shot to hell.
In one fluid movement, he was across the room and she was in his arms. He pulled her body against his and felt her gasp when he pressed his hard arousal into her. Her lips pressed against his with the same need that he felt, and her want only turned him on that much more.
“I’ve never seen you in a dress,” he said into her lips before pressing his back to them.
“I guess this means you like it.” She nibbled on his lower lip and he groaned as he squeezed her ass.
“It’s a shame I have to take it off of you so soon,” he smirked. He eased his tongue into her mouth, and she readily opened up to him.
“Maybe you don’t,” she breathed.
Hunter almost laughed, but instead, he hoisted her up in his arms and pressed her against the wall.
“Hunter!” She gasped. “Light activity.”
“This is light.” He licked her neck and planted a kiss on her collarbone.
“I’m serious,” she laughed.
Fine. He’d play. He loved seeing Rain on top of him, anyway. He loved the way she grinded her hips against him and used him for her pleasure. Just the thought made his cock throb with anticipation.
He walked over to the bed, still carrying her, and sat down so that Rain was straddling him. Then he pushed back towards the middle and laid down, bringing her with him because she tasted too damn good to stop kissing.
She sat up and sighed.
“What’s wrong, baby?”
She lifted one shoulder and dropped it in a half shrug. “Screw the dress.” She pulled it over her head and tossed it away, and he was incredibly pleased to find she had been wearing nothing underneath it.
He pulled her back down to him and continued to kiss her, bringing his hands up and down her soft curves that he loved so much. Something about Rain being on top of him, completely naked, while he lay under her fully clothed was incredibly sexy to Hunter. Nevertheless, he needed his clothes off. Immediately.
As if she heard his thoughts, Rain began pushing his shirt up, running her hands along his abs and chest. He pulled himself upright and she pulled his shirt from him, tossing it on top of her dress. Next, his jeans came off.
Rain balanced herself by placing two hands on his chest, leaning over him so that Hunter could see every piece of her that he wanted to.
“You are so beautiful,” he said. He couldn’t help himself.
Her smiled confirmed his statement. No, it put it to shame. She was so much more than beautiful. She was everything that was good in this world.
“Hunter?”
“Yes?”
“I love you.”
He felt his heart leap in his chest. He pulled her down to him and pressed a kiss to her lips, but this time, it wasn’t a desperate kiss. It was soft, and loving, and deep. And just in case the kiss wasn’t enough, he pulled back and looked into her eyes to give her the message again.
“I love you, too, Rain.”
She smiled and slowly pressed down onto him, taking his full length inside her warmth and slowly rocking back and forth. Hunter continued to kiss her, slowly, holding her hips and letting her move as slowly or as quickly as she liked.
Whatever she wanted, she would have.
Her hips began to come down harder, her movements quicker, and Hunter could feel her tightening around him. She must be close. He certainly hoped she was, because Hunter was about to explode.
He knotted his hand in her hair and kept the other on her hip as she continued to pick up speed. He found himself doing everything he could to hold himself back from pounding into her and erupting.
He stared into her beautiful eyes, watched her face fill with pleasure as she neared release.
“You’re mine,” he growled.
“Always,” she moaned.
“Fuck yes.”
She called out his name and began digging her nails into his chest.
He didn’t have to be asked twice.
Hunter pressed his lips to hers and drove into her as the first waves of orgasm hit them both. The high was so good he didn’t think he’d ever come down.
He stayed like that, holding her and swimming in ecstasy, replaying the word ‘always’ over and over again in his head. It was a word he really liked the sound of.
***
As she laid on Hunter’s chest smiling, Rain couldn’t help but feel like nothing could make that moment between them more perfect. Unfortunately, that familiar sense of worry crept into her stomach when she realized there was something else she had to do before the night was over.
Making love to Hunter three times in a row was fun and all, and laying in a comfortable bed enjoying each other’s company was lovely, but she had one more thing she had to do.
“Hey, Hunter… I need to tell you something.”
“Uh oh.” He laughed and it shook her. “What is it, baby?”
She bit her lip and ran her pointer finger in circles on Hunter’s chest. “If I was able to, would you want to have children one day?”
Hunter pushed up on an elbow, forcing Rain to do the same. She looked up at him and saw his eyes sparkling with something, the same thing she had seen so many times in those eyes. But, for the first time, she knew what it was: devotion. To her.
“I love you, Rain. I don’t care about children. I just want to build a life with you.”
Her heart warmed, but she needed an answer. “But if I could, would you want them?”
“Rain, I don’t need-”
“I’m pregnant.” Damn it. That was not how that was supposed to go.
His face was blank. Shocked. Processing.
“How do you-”
“I’ve had five separate tests run. Three by one of the doctors from the compound and two by Dr. Christopher. Plus the other obvious signs, like no period and random nausea.” She knew what he was going to ask.
She watched his adam’s apple move as he swallowed. “Are you sure?”
“Positive.”
“How-”
“The first doctor lied to me. He told me I couldn’t have kids, but he lied. I wasn’t broken after all.”
“You were never broken, Rain.” She smiled at the remark, but his face was still empty, and it frightened her. She waited for something else.
“You’re pregnant.” It was more a statement than a question, but she answered anyway.
“I’m pregnant.”
His eyes darted up to her face, and then his lips were on hers, his arms squeezing her too tightly, his body pressing into her. She pulled away and stared at him, only to see the biggest smile spread across his face.
She let out the air she had been unknowingly holding in her lungs. “You’re happy?”
“Baby, I’m thrilled.”
He pulled her in and hugged her again, but this time, she didn’t pull back. She melted into his arms and settled into the safety and warmth they provided.
For the first time in her life, Rain felt like she belonged. It wasn’t the nice house, or the comfy bed, or the tall walls, as great as they all were. It was the arms that held her tightly, the lips that made her fly, the man who had given her a life worth living.
She closed her eyes as Hunter continued to squeeze her tightly, and for the first time in her life, Rain knew something with absolute certainty: she was home.
THE END
Epilogue
IT HADN’T BEEN THAT long since they had seen each other, but it seemed that Rain’s belly grew with each passing day. She looked like she was about to give birth any moment. And the beaming man who had his arm over her shoulders and a smile permanently etched into his face seemed like he couldn’t wait.
“Based on how big your belly is, I think that one is going to take after his dad.”
Rain chuckled and waddled toward
s Kayla. Kayla opened her arms and pulled her close, pressing a kiss to her cheek. Then she hugged Hunter hello before pulling away.
“It could be a girl,” Rain responded. “We have no idea.”
“Boy or girl, they’re gonna be a big one!” she laughed. Hunter and Rain joined her.
Kayla placed her hand on Rain’s round belly, waited a couple of seconds, and then felt a small kick. She smiled and Rain giggled, obviously feeling the same thing. She knelt down to Rain’s belly.
“What do you say, baby? Are you going to be a fighter like your daddy?” Kayla joked.
“No,” Hunter responded as Kayla straightened her back. He wrapped his arms around Rain and stared down at her with a love that made Kayla’s heart hurt. “He’ll be a fighter like his mama.”
Kayla noticed the red rush to Rain’s cheeks at that remark, but Hunter just bent down to kiss her. Well, with that…
“You two are gross, and I have to go!”
They pulled away from each other and laughed. “I’m sorry!” Rain said.
Kayla chuckled and told her she was just joking around. She wished them both well and continued on her way, jogging towards the main square and sifting through the crowd of people. It seemed endless, but before long, she had made her way to the front of the crowd.
And right there, at centerstage, where he’d always done so well, Sawyer stared out at the crowd. He cleared his throat and silence fell over the entire square. She had no idea how he did it, but anyone who’d met him could tell that Sawyer was born to lead.
“What we’ve built here over the past several months is more than we dreamed of when we first started the Resistance. From the time the Resistance was only an idea, the goal was always to take back our land, our country, our freedoms. The goal was always to defend the weak, to speak the truth, to protect our people, all of our people, and save them from the monsters who wished to enslave us all.
“And, while this was the goal, it all seemed very unreachable. For years.” Sawyer paced on the stage. “Yet here we are, in control of one of the UNR’s major districts. We’ve taken their center of operations. We’ve wiped out their largest cell in the countryside. We’ve freed the surrounding towns and the civilians inhabiting them. We’ve built a life here, a life that we never thought we’d have.”
The crowd cheered. Sawyer didn’t seem as enthusiastic.
“While we may have done all of these amazing things, we are not done. The UNR still has strongholds in the East and the West, and while they’ve left us alone for these last few months, we are absolutely certain they will try to take this place back. They will try to take back what has become our home.”
Murmurs filled the crowd. He continued. “That’s the thing, though. All of this is our home. All of this is ours, all of their prisoners are our brothers and sisters, as the elders once sang, from sea to shining sea, this land belongs to free men and women.
“We will not be enslaved. We will not be beat down. We will not be silenced or intimidated or afraid.”
Kayla could physically feel the energy of the crowd shift. Tingles filled her lower stomach as Sawyer continued to speak.
“Some of you have been with us for years, some for months, some for weeks. I don’t care. I look to all of you as equals, and I come to all of you to ask one thing, and one thing only.”
In a crowd of hundreds, Kayla swore she could’ve heard a pin drop.
“Will you fight against tyranny?”
The crowd cheered.
“Will you fight against oppression?”
Louder.
“Will you fight against the senseless killing of your friends, your families, your countrymen?”
The people were going mad.
“Will you fight with me,” Sawyer yelled, “until the UNR is nothing but a long lost memory, a scary story teens tell each other over campfires, a tale so distant and dead that our children will equate it to tales of the boogeyman?”
The screams and hollers of support did not stop. Fists pounded into the airs as Sawyer went on. “I will fight and die until every last piece of the UNR has fallen and freedom has been restored to every corner of this country. Will you fight with me?!”
Kayla couldn’t contain the smile that spread across her face as chills ran down her spine. She stared up at Sawyer, who was sweating and grinning, eyes ablaze with plans for what would come next.
As his eyes met hers, he gave a small nod, his face softening for just a second, just long enough for her to catch. She felt her breath hitch, and then he looked away, staring out over the crowd once more and waiting for them to settle.
There was nothing that could settle down that crowd. Sawyer laughed and smiled, placing his hands around his mouth and yelling out to the crowd as loudly as he could.
