I had left Ben and Daryl at the front gates, telling them that they were on their own getting back inside. They hadn’t liked that, and I honestly didn’t give two shits. I threw my backpack onto my bed and changed into some pajamas. We were only supposed to have been gone for a few hours. I mean, Chicago was only two hours from Myrtle Beach, but I hadn’t been in any hurry to get home. I had planned to come back home with my winning prize, but she got away from me. I hadn’t suspected everyone to be armed with some type of weapon. That had definitely surprised us all, but it won’t happen next time.
I laughed at the memory of telling Cole to ask Tony about all the “accidents”. What I really wanted to say was to ask Tony how he had planned and executed all the accidents, but where was the fun in that? Melody was a smart girl. I knew the “Chosen One” would figure it all out. It was the only thing I could think of to get Tony out of the way. He never should’ve been elected leader. That right was mine. When he’s gone, I’ll get my chance to prove to everyone who the real leader is.
After throwing on some sweats and a t-shirt, I sat on my bed and picked up the picture of Peter that I had on my nightstand. I was about to say some smart-ass comment, but a knock sounded on the door, cutting me off. Shit.
“Jasper,” he said severely, as he opened the door. He took off his red baseball cap and sunglasses and glowered at me.
“Yes?” I asked innocently.
“Where the hell were you?”
“Oh, I was out and about.”
“Quit giving me bullshit answers. Tony called last night and told me what happened.”
I rolled my eyes. “Then why the hell did you even ask if you knew where I was?”
He came in and closed the door. “Tony isn’t answering his phone. I think something happened. He was extremely furious on the phone. Maybe he let something slip, and now they know about him.”
I could hardly contain my excitement. “So, go over and check. It’s not like you have very far to go.”
“You know I can’t risk that. If something really did happen, then they’ll already suspect me.”
“Then, what the hell do you want me to do, Colin?”
Colin looked at me for a long moment, and sighed. “As second in command, you’re next in line to become our leader.”
The corner of my lip twitched up. Colin didn’t say anything else before stepping out and closing the door behind him.
I picked the picture of Peter back up. “What do you think of me now, Dad? I guess I’m not so powerless, after all.”
