I got to my feet and Alvis followed me.
‘No thanks to Agent Myles,’ I said, as my anger spiked. ‘That bastard lied to me.’
‘That he did. He lied to all of us. There was no internal review. Myles was asked to observe the team, not run it. He was pulling strings way above his pay-grade, probably hoping to impress his superiors. Carter was livid when he found out he’d been jumping through hoops for nothing.’
I searched the grassy plains of Hampstead Heath for Carter, and finally found him surrounded by S.P.T.F. agents. They seemed to hang on his every word as he gave out orders and directions. We hadn’t had a chance to speak about happened between us, as whenever I’d plucked up the courage to call him he’d cut me off, blaming work commitments for not being able to talk.
Carter seemed to sense me staring, as he stopped talking and looked straight at me. He smiled, but then seemed to correct himself, and his smile faded.
‘He cares for you, Ember. Don’t give up on him. He needs someone like you to show him there’s more to life than this job.’
‘I know,’ I said, returning my attention to Doctor Alvis, ‘but I guess some things just aren’t meant to be.’
I’d finished another assignment and survived, but in doing so, I’d lost Carter. Although, I suspected I’d never had him - not really. The man whose bed I’d shared and whose lips I’d kissed was an imposter. The man standing on the heath was the real Carter.
The soldier.
The chief of the unit.
The man who’d let me go for the sake of the team.
I peeled off my paper coverall, once again wishing it were as easy to remove the heartache.
‘Goodbye, Doctor Alvis,’ I said. ‘There’s nothing left for me here now.’
‘Goodbye, Ember. I hope you eventually find the closure you’re seeking.’
‘Me too,’ I lied, as closure wasn’t really what I would be seeking next – it was revenge – and that was a promise.
