by Joe Fowler
You can imagine my surprise when brightness blinded me even though my eyes were still closed. I opened them a little at a time trying to get accustomed to the pure white light. I saw a man standing before me. He was smiling. Goodness flowed from him. At least that was reassuring. I would have expect a red tinge to everything. Isn’t that how hell is supposed to be?
“You won’t be going to hell. You are the first vampire in history that won’t be going to hell. You did very well Austin.” The smiling man said.
“Am I in heaven then?” I asked incredulously. A vampire in heaven didn’t seem possible but what were the alternatives?
“No. At least not for a while. You killed a man. That is what is keeping you out for now. Your heroics fighting to defend the innocent has kept you out of hell. That leaves us with a puzzle. What should we do with you?” He paused for effect. “You will go on as a ghost until we have a chance to use you. You may be in our service for a very long time. We will give you assignments to help people and you must keep succeeding to earn the chance at heaven. You will be allowed to stop at any time and remain a ghost if that is what you choose.”
“I understand. Can I ask who you are?” I didn’t want to overstep my bounds or offend him. He only smiled.
“I am Gabriel, the Archangel.” He laughed gently. “Josh would probably still call me Keith.”
