Dannick and Bretton joined us, whispering among themselves.
“We have a problem.” Bretton glanced between me and Ryn.
“And?” Ryn’s hand waved for him to spit it out. “What’s the matter?”
“The main gate is still surrounded by a mob.” Dannick crossed his thick arms. “The imbeciles are still calling for Kitra to be turned over to them.” We all quieted, and the mob’s low chants pulsed under the silence like a thief in the night. They begged to destroy me and the wolves I polluted their kingdom with, but I refused to let anyone else suffer in this unforgiving realm.
“They don’t know what happened inside?” Lilly raised a brow as the mob’s chorus rose to a crescendo.
“It’s doesn’t appear so.” Dannick scratched at his cheek. “They are threatening to blast the palace again.”
“Can you calm them if we’re gone?” Dannick nodded in answer to my question. “We can go through the cave again.”
“They have the beach blocked also.” Bretton’s head dropped. “We’re surrounded.”
“Not necessarily.” I took a deep breath. Aunt Mauve told me I could teleport between worlds. Maybe if I concentrated, I’d be able to take them all with me. I’d never been able to control it before, but maybe this time it would work.
“You can do this.” The male whisper sent comfort down my spine and I knew I’d get everyone to Serenade Falls without going near the mob.
“What do you have in mind?” Gwen, Allie, and Austin crowded in with us.
“If Dannick will take care of the Seelie kingdom, I…I think I can teleport us home.” Several conversations tried to be louder than each other and I yelled my reasonings over them. Once everyone was quiet and I told them how I’d teleported before, my suggestion became more plausible. My faith in my ability waned the more I talked about it but I had to try. We weren’t getting past the mob otherwise.
“I’m going with you.” Bretton’s shoulder’s straightened and he stood taller.
I stared at him for a long time and finally nodded. “Fine. We could use the help.” I turned to Dannick. “Are you all right with the plan?”
“I will keep the kingdom safe, Princess.” Dannick’s right hand crossed over his heart and his head bowed.
“I couldn’t leave it in better hands.” I took a deep breath and blew it out through my mouth. “Everyone, hold onto to me.”
I reached down and grasped Phobos’s fur. Are you coming with me?
I go where you go, Princess. I felt his paw transform into a human hand and it latched around my ankle. I’m ready when you are.
I closed my eyes as the others grasped my arms, shoulders, and back. Aunt Mauve once said all I had to do was picture where I wanted to go and I’d be there. I imagined the howling wolf fountain and the ivy climbing the side of Frost Manor. I envisioned the black marble countertops in the kitchen and all the stainless-steel appliances. I visualized my bedroom furniture with the scent of all the crazy perfumes Allie swore we had to try. The basement gym covered in our blood, sweat, and tears from all the times we practiced filled my head. I wanted to go back to a time before we were broken. Before I was broken. Moisture gathered beneath my lashes and my lips trembled. I almost tasted the scents swirling in my memory and kept the wail threatening to deafen our circle on my tongue. I wanted to go home.
A soft inhale to my left made me open my eyes and my lips trembled. We stood on the mats in the gym. Phobos moved away from us, sniffing the mats and along the walls. The hands gripping me fell and I had thought my tear ducts were dry, but more gathered in the corners. We were home, but not all of us had made it back.
“It’s time to tell the pack.” Linc put his hand on Curtis’s shoulder and Zander joined them. “Then we get our alpha and Mauve back.”
The journey ahead was destined to be long and hard. We were lost and the changes which occurred darkened each of our outlooks, but that was what grief did. Would time heal our wounds? I didn’t know, but I was determined to rescue Caden and my Aunt while following my mother’s clues to the weapon. Aelfric may have won the battle, but the war was far from over.
