I don’t know if he knew that his time was running out or if maybe, just maybe, he had seen the light. You see, we talked about everything. We talked about the effects of drugs on his life. The effects the people he hung around with had on his life. We talked about everything under the sun and the moon, but he had always wanted to shield me from the bad. He had always wanted to keep me safe.
That’s why, when I was hanging out with his friends he stared to beat them up. He developed a reputation for beating anyone who put me near drugs or invited me to any parties. It was something that, at the time, I hated. But as time went on and I grew up, I realized that he was doing it to keep me safe.
I remember the day he called my uncle like it was yesterday. I was absolutely terrified. No one in my family knew what was going on. They had all thought I was this innocent little angle that got straight A’s. They had no idea that I had missed 53 school days straight. They had no idea that I was going to fail my senior year.
I have ‘Brittan’ to thank for getting my family to notice, for sicking my uncle on me and getting my ass in gear. I had to do summer school to graduate. I’m not proud of the mistakes I have made. I am just glad that I learned from them. I’m glad that I had someone in my corner looking out for me when I was too ignorant to look out for myself.
I will forever love ‘Brittan’. He was a huge part of my life and the most amazing man I had ever known. He was my first love, my first heartbreak, and my first everything in between. He was my rock, my laughter, my light, and my protector.
I will forever miss him. I miss his laughter, his smile, the way my name rolled off his lips and the way he made me feel like I was on top of the world. Every day I see his smile in our daughters face. I see his happiness reflected in her eyes. A part of him lives on with me. For that I am eternally grateful.
