Use Somebody: Plantain Series Book Four Page 28

by Amelia Oliver

I look over at her, a fondness in her eyes as she looks at the many jewels.

“Why did he get you an engagement ring every year?”

Her eyes flick to mine. “We were never married,” she states and my jaw slackens.

“I didn’t know that,” I say in shock.

She lifts a shoulder. “I gather there’s a lot you don’t know about us,” she smiles.

“How come you never said yes?” I question.

“Where I came from, marriage was what you did, no way around it. Sven and I weren’t like everyone else, we loved each other spirit and soul, flesh and blood. We experienced things for each other that can’t be shoved in the guidelines of husband and wife.” She sighs, looking up at me. “Anyway, pick something you think Daisy would love.”

My eyes scan the rings one by one. “I think she’d love them all,” I state.

“Might I make a suggestion?” she asks.

  “Of course.”

Her frail hand tremors slightly as she reaches across and plucks a small canary yellow diamond surrounded by small diamonds. Instantly, it reminds me of a daisy and I know this is the one.

“Sven proposed to me with this in Hawaii, it’s a rare gem and a hand-crafted piece, one of a kind, just like your Daisy.”

She places the ring in my palm and I look down at it.

“This is perfect, thank you,” I tell her, leaning over and kissing her cheek.

We walk back downstairs and I feel bad just leaving. I never get to spend time with her since I’ve become an adult, not just me and her. We walk into the kitchen and I assume she’s expecting me to head out as she flips on the teapot, and I know she’s not going to sleep any time soon. Pulling one of the stools out from the breakfast bar, I take a seat. Her eyes look at me surprised before a small smile comes over her lips.

  “How did you meet Grandpa?”

The next book in The Plantain Series will be a novella entitled Poker Face. This story is about Irys and Evan, the romance that blindsided us, and them. I plan to release this in the summer, followed but the next and last novel in the series, Free Bird. This one takes us back to the beginning of it all with Missy and Sven.
