“See this carving here? Believe it or not, I carved this when I was a human. This actually ended up being a big clue to my former identity. Daniel K. luvs Megan S. I was Daniel K. and she was Megan S. Isn’t that weird?”
When she didn’t reply, Greshmere looked over and saw that she seemed to be distracted by something.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
“Yeah. I just sort of have a strange ringing in my ears. That’s all.”
“I had that happen once, I—”
Suddenly, Jazzy stared pecking at the ground under the tree.
“What are you doing?” Greshmere said.
She didn’t reply. She continued pecking away, harder and faster. Greshmere stood there spellbound, unsure what to do. She didn’t look like she wanted to be interrupted.
Moments later, she had dug a hole six inches deep and a couple of inches wide. Suddenly, she pulled something long and shiny from the hole. She kept tugging at it until it was completely unearthed.
It was a chain with a pendant.
A Mizpah, to be more precise.
“What the—”
Jazzy let the necklace fall to the ground and stared over at Greshmere.
“This is your Mizpah, Daniel. I buried it here right after your funeral.”
Greshmere’s heart raced.
“What are you saying?” he said, his voice quivering with wonder.
“It’s me, Daniel! Megan!”
Greshmere was speechless. He just stood there for a moment staring into his wife’s lovely brown eyes. The most beautiful eyes in the world. And in heaven.
Megan spoke. “It started coming back to me the moment we came to this tree. The ringing sound. Something told me to start digging, so I dug. Halfway down, I knew exactly what I was digging for. At that moment, I knew that everything you had told me was true. That you had come back to find me. We had been in our house, in the family room. I had just learned that Gary Jamison had killed you and he was strangling me to death on the sofa. While I was gasping for my last breath, I remember seeing this little sparrow trying so desperately to save me from the monster. I watched as you pecked at both of his eyes and made him blind. My last thoughts before I died were how courageous this little bird was and how much I loved my husband. Somehow I knew that I would see you again. And then I could tell you that we had finally done it. That we’d finally gotten pregnant! And I knew that somehow we would all three live happily ever after. God, Daniel, I love you so much!”
Delirious with emotion, Daniel spread his wings and embraced her. He held her tight and lifted her high off of the ground.
They had indeed finally done it!
