“Looks like we managed to completely save the day, after all,” he said.
Claire blushed in that adorable way she did, but then grinned. “Does this mean we can finally relax and maybe go on a real date?”
Seth laughed. “I’ll take you out wherever you want to go, sweetheart. You deserve it.”
The sound of someone clearing their throat brought Seth back to the present moment. He looked up and saw Councilor Morgan and Councilor Isviar standing right next to them.
“I don’t mean to interrupt,” Councilor Morgan said, but I did want the chance for a quick word with you two.”
Predictably, Claire’s face turned red with embarrassment. “I’m so sorry we didn’t tell you about the coins. It’s just that—”
Councilor Morgan held up a hand to stop her. “Don’t apologize, Claire. Leif told us everything, and we understand why you did what you did. We’re actually here to apologize. We were wrong not to trust you more. Sometimes we don’t make the right calls, and we definitely didn’t make the right call here. But thank you for not letting us hold you back from doing what you knew in your heart was right. Your persistence saved a lot of lives.”
“Seth helped, too. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without him.”
“We appreciate you both,” Councilor Isviar said. “And we’d like to know if both of you would be willing to do a TV segment together. We think the story of how you two saved Torch Lake would inspire people quite a bit.”
Seth groaned. “Does this mean I have to wear makeup again? I’ve had about all the makeup-wearing I can take.”
Claire laughed. “Oh, you better get used to it if you’re gonna be with me. We’re just getting started.”
Despite himself, Seth laughed. “Yes we are, Love. Yes we are.”
He pulled Claire into a big hug. The truth was that the first day he’d had to wear that TV makeup had been the happiest day of his life—because it had been the day he’d met Claire. A little makeup was a small price to pay for a lifetime of happiness with the woman he loved.
