With treatment and good care, Pat eventually became well enough to be discharged. Karen convinced Bob to employ him as a lab assistant, cleaning up and looking after the stores. He enjoyed regaling the students with tales of the good old days, and they loved to humor the babbling Irishman. Pat and Bob became friends, and Pat even apologized to his superior. “I’m sorry, Bob,” he said. “I’m sorry you’re such a boob.” Patrick still makes me laugh.
