“Mom,” Dylan called. “Come on up. You can see everybody from up here.”

She looked down at the long skirt then up at the two people she loved most. “Okay,” she said. “I’m on my way.” Gathering the folds of her skirt in one hand, she took a deep breath, remembered not to look down and made her way slowly and carefully up the ladder.

Brandon reached out to pull her up. They moved aside and made room for her and her dress between them, and the three of them sat there looking down at the guests and the ranch.

“This isn’t like a wedding,” Dylan said. “It’s more like a birthday for me, cuz you got me everything I wanted. My tree house and a dad. I just want one more thing.”

Laura sighed. “What’s that?” She braced herself for requests of a remote-controlled airplane or a ten-speed bike, all of which Brandon wouldn’t hesitate to buy for him.

“A baby brother or a sister.”

Laura turned her head and met Brandon’s gaze. He smiled at her and she nodded, communicating without speaking. Tell him. Let’s tell him what the plan is.

“What about one of each?” he asked Dylan.

His shouts of glee could be heard all over the ranch. It was hard to know who was happiest. Brandon, Dylan or Laura.
