“Tanya, I need to tell you something.”

Tanya’s face fell like she expected the worse.

“I knew it was too good to be true. What is it? I’ve heard it all. You have a girlfriend back in Sweden or something?”

  “What? No.”

  “In Norway, Denmark, Finland then?”

“Stop. No girlfriends or wives or anything. I’m single—for now.”

  “For now?”

“Well, you—I mean, I would want you to—um, let me start over.”

Tanya pulled her hand out of his hand and scooted over, disappointment plastered all over her face.

“Don’t look at me like that please?”

Colton felt his stomach turn in knots. He could feel her pulling away in more ways than one.

  “Just say it.”

They were at the very top of the Ferris wheel and Colton had an idea. He took a deep breath and vibrated so hard he knew she could not see him. He jumped over the edge and ran down to where the bears were for the ball toss game. He grabbed one with a heart on its stomach and ran up to the Ferris wheel before the wheel was half way down.

“Oh my God!” Tanya screamed, pulling at the door.

“I can explain, but we need to talk in private.”

“No way. What the—look I’m not—I—what are you?”

“I’m a vampire,” he said, handing her the stuffed bear.

  “Are you going to—drink me?”

  Colton laughed.

“No, I don’t usually go on dates with my meals. Can we talk somewhere else?”

  “Why me?”

  “I like you.”

  “Can you even, um?”

‘Is that where your mind is going?” He smiled, feeling encouraged.

“No, I—well, yes. I’m just confused why you’re here with me.”

“Well, the simple answer is I think you’re beautiful, and want to get to know you, and date you.”

  “What’s the complicated answer?”

The wheel ground to a halt on the bottom, and Colton reached for her hand. She looked down his hand, her own hands were shaking.

“You promise you won’t kill me?”

“Only if you promise not to break my heart.”

  “Colton!”

“I’m joking. We’ve been together all day. Have I given any sign that I plan kill you?”

She thought for a moment and then shook her head. She took Colton’s hand and walked off the platform with him down to the crowded, grassy field. A few droplets of rain fell on Colton’s shoulders, and Tanya crossed her arms and huddled close to him.

  “Now what?” she asked.

Colton looked up at the tall trees surrounding the fairgrounds. It the foreground of the trees were tall white capped mountains.

“Are cabins around here?” Colton asked.

“Yeah, but most of them are closed for the off season.”

  “Good.”

  “Why good?”

He leaned in so no one in the shuffling crowd could hear him.

“I’m going to pick you up. Don’t scream.”

  “Oh no.”

Before Tanya could say another word, Colton picked her up. She threw her arms around his neck and he took off at top speed.

“I will talk and you listen,” he said darting the crowd, and taking off into the woods.

“How will you know where to go if I don’t say anything?” she asked, tightening her grip as he jumped over a stream.

“Good point. Tell me where to go, and I will explain. Are you getting sick?”

“No—I—kind of like it. It’s like flying,” she said, loosening her grip on his neck.

Colton smiled and moved even faster. She leaned on his chest, and he heard her heart rate pick up again. She was thrilled, and so was he.

  *****

When they got to a log cabin, secluded high on a mountain, Colton looked around to make sure no one had followed them. He could not hear anything but animals and a nearby stream. His hearing was keen, but his smell was his best sense. It was so vampires could pick up the scent of blood no matter where they were. Robbed of that sense, he had to rely on his next best: hearing and sight.

“This is breaking and entering!” Tanya whispered, looking around.

Colton ignored her, punched in a glass sidelight window. He reached in and unlocked the door.

“This is why I’m creating the least amount of damage. If you weren’t here I would kick the door in. I’m trying to be polite.”

  “Gee, thanks, Colton.

  “After you.”

Colton stepped aside, and Tanya walked into the cabin.

It was a spotless, two-story rustic cabin. A checkered couch and a bearskin rug were in front of an unlit fire. Tanya shivered. Colton looked at the fire and walked over and saw dusty logs in the hearth. He lit one of his hands and touched the logs.

“Holy shit,” Tanya said, stepping backwards.

“I didn’t want you to be cold. How many times do I have to tell you I won’t hurt you?”

Colton rose to his feet and reached out for her but she stepped back.

  “Aren’t your hands still hot?”

Colton shook his head, watching the shade of the flames play across her breast and hips.

“Why don’t you come here and find out?”

“I don’t know if I’m in the mood knowing my potential boyfriend can set me on fire.”

“I can set you on fire in other ways. And you’re lying. I can hear your heart rate and breathing perfectly. It sounds like it did when we were kissing in the fun house. You’re not scared. You’re turned on.”

Tanya crossed her arms, and looked down at the bear skin rug, and back at him.

“Have you done this before? With a girl like me, I mean?”

Colton shook his and stepped closer to her.

“How do I know that you won’t hurt me?”

Her eyes were low, and her breathing was slowing to a needy pant.

He pulled her close to him, and kissing her neck. He nibbled her neck, careful to keep his fangs sheathed. She wrapped her arms around him, and he felt her relax in his arms. Knowing she was not scared of him turned him on more than this tight dress that he was ready to rip off of her.

  “Trust me?” he asked.

She nodded, and he bared his fangs. Her eyes widened, but she did not move. He dragged his hands down her back, settling on her ass. He leaned in, kissing her breast, and then dragged his razor-sharp fangs down the front of her dress, splitting it in two. She was wearing a sexy, see-through matching black lace bra and thong.

“You always wear that to the Maple Syrup Festival?” he asked, sheathing his fangs.

She shrugged, embarrassed, and stared down at her fingers. He cupped her chin with his fingers.

“You look sexy. Don’t be embarrassed. Lay down. On the floor.”

She obeyed, lying down on the rug. He knelt in front of her and pried her legs open. He looked down at her panties and licked his lips. When he looked back at her there was a mixture of panic and pleasure on her face. He dragged his finger down her thighs, slipped her panties to the side and slipped two fingers inside. He stroked her slowly, and she moaned. Her hips were swaying into him and she was soaking wet. He wanted her so turned on that fear was the furthest thing from her mind.

“I won’t hurt you, baby,” he said, kissing the inside of her thighs. As he brushed his lips against her creamy skin, he found himself craving the chance to spank her voluptuous ass, to hear her whimper with pleasure at his touch.

She seemed to be whimpering his name. He pulled the panties down and threw them across the room. He kept stroking her clit until her legs were shaking.

“I’m gonna come, Colton,” she said, gripping the fur of the bearskin rug.

He put his face between her legs, kissing and licking her. She tasted so sweet so he shoved his tongue deeper inside her, his lips brushing softly against her opening. She arched her back and let out a
low moan as she came hard on his face. When he raised his head to look at her, her stomach and breasts were painted with sheen of sweat that made her look like she was glowing in the firelight.

“Did I hurt you?” Colton asked, licking her juices from his lips.

She shook her head. Colton pulled his clothes off, and hovered over her naked body.

“Lay down—on your back,” she said, startling him.

  Colton obeyed.

She climbed onto him, and sank down into him. Colton felt his fangs threaten to unsheathe as her tight, wet pussy slid around his rigid cock like a sheathe. She sank deeper on him, biting her lip, taking in the fullness of his dick. She unstrapped her bra, and two perfect, full breasts were exposed. He reached up and cupped them in his hands, stroking her nipples with his fingers. She moaned and then started grinding her pussy onto his swollen cock, slowly at first, and then faster, her juices dripping down his shaft. The wetter she got the faster she moved, her swollen breasts bouncing around in front of his face as her ass gyrated against his legs. He could not help it; he pulled one of his free and slapped her ass, growling as she cried out in pleasure and moved faster and faster. He sat up, pulling her deeper into him. Her body was shaking, and her hands were tangled in his hair. He could hear her gasping for breath as her pussy contracted around his dick.

“You’re mine, Tanya!” he groaned, kissing her and flipping her on her stomach.

He perched her ass in the air, and kissed her shoulder, back, and luscious cheeks, enjoying the purr she emitted as he covered her body with his lips. He shoved his dick inside her pussy again and grabbed her waist, moving her as fast as he could without hurting her. Watching her ass bounce and sway onto his dick, slick from her arousal, was the sexiest thing he had ever seen in his life. He wanted to take her ass. Hell, he wanted to take her whole body. All he could think of was her being like him. How he could fuck her on mountaintops, on ceilings, at Mach speed hard and fast, and how they would be unable to hurt each other. She was so wet, and the thought of them together forever was too much. He came hard inside her, and she cried out as she came again at the same time, their bodies intertwined as ecstasy pulsed through them.

“If you killed me after fucking me like that, it would have been worth it,” Tanya said, cuddling naked into his chest.

He laughed, kissing the top of her head.

  “Are you okay?”

  “Yea. I’m great.”

“You’re not just saying that? Like are you okay everywhere?”

“Do you want to check?” She raised her eyebrow at him.

He grinned and slipped his hands between her legs. She was starting to get wet again.

“Wait. Don’t distract me. We need to talk.” She swatted his hand away playfully.

“You can talk. I think my tongue is going to be busy, baby.”

She grinned, and pinched her thighs closed. He felt a pang of disappointment and pulled his hand away.

“Okay, what do you want to talk about?” He pretended to pout

  “Isolde.”

  “What about him?”

  Her eyes widened.

  “What’s the plan?”

Colton shrugged. He could not think straight with his dick getting hard all over again. There was not exactly a refractory period with vampires.

“Babe, I don’t want him to kill you!” Tanya’s tone was laced with concern.

“I don’t either, trust me. I don’t know what game he’s playing. He wanted me to see him, but he hasn’t attacked me or anyone else. Everything is a game to him. He doesn’t see it as life and death. He can’t sense finality.”

  “And you can?”

“Yes. I’m young in my world. I still remember how humans fear death. I still fear death.”

  “Can you—die?

“I don’t think so. Fire is what kills us but as you saw I don’t have a problem with fire. Besides…I already tried. It didn’t work, obviously”

Colton sat up, hanging his head. He had not planned on telling her that. She sat up, and hugged him, kissing his shoulders.

“Don’t try anything else stupid. I need you.”

Colton perked up, and looked at her. She meant it. Her eyes said it.

“I need you too, Tanya, but I might have to go away.”

“No! Why would you do that?”

“Because Isolde sees life as a game. He will attack you if he thinks you’re a way to win. It’s just fun for him. You should have seen what he did to people at his games.”

“I’ll pass. You can’t just leave me.”

“I’m leaving for you. I will come back, but—”

“But nothing, Colton. In human relationships, the boyfriend does not leave, and not even say where he’s going while the girlfriend sits at home twiddling her thumbs and not knowing what month, what decade he will come back!”

Colton went to speak, but he knew she was right. Time was relative to him, and finite to her. If only she was like him. He pushed that thought from his mind; he could not force her to make that decision.

“I’d like to go home, please,” Tanya said, putting on her underwear.

  “What? Why?”

“I—don’t think I thought this through. And you don’t even care, so why bother?”

“How can you say that? Of course I care. I want to be with you. It’s just I need—”

“Time? I know, Colton. I have very little, and you have more than I could mention.”

She took a deep breath, and stared into the fire.

“So that’s it, then?” Colton’s voice sounded hollow and defeated.

“Yeah. This is what humans call a one-night stand. Just take me home please.”

Tears were falling from her eyes, and Colton’s shoulders slumped. He reached out for her but she stepped back. It felt like pins and needles were all over his body. How did this go so wrong so fast? He darted into the bedrooms at lightning speed, rifling through the drawers. Luckily, he found a white dress.

“Here,” he said, handing it to her.

“How did you know it would be here?”

“I didn’t. I just figured I’d check. Otherwise I would have given you my shirt.”

She threw it on, and pulled on her sneakers. It looked like she was going to a courthouse wedding, and the thought made him smile. She did not seem to notice. Colton was dressed before she turned around, and seemed startled when she turned around, and he was dressed.

  “Ready?” he asked.

“Should we put the fire out?”

“No, in my experience some things just die out on their own. Where should I take you?”

  “My dad’s please. Colton—I don’t want you to think I don’t care. I just—”

“I get it. I’m a supernatural freak. You want to settle down with a good, old, human boy. Let me get you home.”

Tanya walked over and he picked her up. Tentatively, she threw her arms around his neck, and he took off. He headed towards town and she leaned her head against his chest, and he felt the distinct warmth of salty tears, running down his chest.

  *****

When they got to the house, Colton stiffened. Not just because he was saying goodbye to Tanya, but because something felt off. The two-story brick house looked the same as the others in the suburbs.

“Wait,” Colton said, grabbing Tanya’s arm.

“Why?” Tanya asked, pulling her arm away.

Colton put his fingers to his lips to shush her. She obeyed, but her eyebrows were knitted together in confusion.

When Colton drew nearer he heard whistling, and the door was ajar.

“Does your dad whistle?” Colton asked, realizing it was a stupid question.

“What? Not really. Did you open that?”

  “No. It was open.”

  “Oh no. Something’s wrong.”

Colton looked around, grabbed Tanya’s hand and followed the sound of whistling up a staircase. When they got to an office, the door was ajar, an
d the whistling was louder.

“That’s not my dad,” Tanya said.

  “Stay here.”

  “No.”

Tanya stormed ahead, and flung the door open.

“Shit!” Colton said, zooming in front of Tanya.

She was screaming and clawing to get in front on him.

  “Baby, don’t look, please.”

  “No, no, no, no. Daddy!”

She was crying into Colton’s chest. Colton rubbed her back and noticed an open window. Isolde was gone, but Colton could hear the whistling fading away. He should chase him, but Tanya needed him.

Her father was slumped over his desk. In his blood on the wall it read “Isolde 1 Colton 0.”

“Colton, kill him. You have to kill him.”

Colton’s eyes scanned the room, and he saw an envelope on the desk in Tanya’s dad’s hand. Colton walked over and grabbed it and led Tanya out of the room.

“Is that from him?” Tanya said, sniffling.

  “Yeah.”

Colton opened it, and read aloud.

“Dearest Colton, Please pardon that I had to dine—” he paused and looked at Tanya before continuing.

“It’s okay. I want to hear.”

Colton cleared this throat and continued. “I had to dine and run. The best thing for dinner is dessert. I planned on your girlfriend, but sadly you intervened. I do like after-dinner games though. Since you like this “soccer” so much, I say we meet at the field. Bring your girlfriend if you like. I give you my word that it will just be me. Oh, I lied, forgive me! I will be bringing Nico and Ryan as my dates. See you soon. I’m already there.”

  “Fuck! Let’s go!”

Colton had no time to think. He grabbed Tanya and ran towards the school. They zoomed past cars as Colton leaped over the buildings on campus and skidded to a stop on the field. Nico and Ryan were in one goal in their pajamas. Isolde was standing in the other goal.

“Oh, you came!” Isolde said, clapping his pale fingers together with mocking glee.

“Let them go. This is between us,” Colton said, pushing Tanya behind him.

“Oh no, I make the rules. It’s a twist on soccer, you see. Well, I stretched the rules. I will give you two choices. One, if I get a ball past them, I get to kill them, and you and Tanya go free or—you get a ball pass me and your friends, including Tanya, go free, and you die. Or something like that,” Isolde said, baring yellow-black fangs.
