Terri was beginning to feel a little teary herself, so before the entire scene could get weepy, she pointed to a bag leaning against the side of her dresser. “I got him a frame too. I figure he deserves at least that much for saving my ass out there in your barn.”

Jen shuddered, recalling Terri’s tale of what had transpired that night. “Terri, baby, I can’t even begin to think what could have happened if Snickers hadn’t been such a loudmouth that night. Please, please promise me you’ll never get shot again.”

“Promise me you don’t have any other old friends out there that want to kill you.”

“Fair enough.” Jen raised her right hand. “I swear to you that I have no other skeletons in my closet that wish me dead.”

She added a resolute nod for emphasis.

“Understood.” Terri took Jen’s hands and looked her directly in the eye. “I promise that I will do my best to make sure I never get shot again. It wasn’t much fun, believe me.”

She was reminded of that fact as her rib support shifted, causing her to flinch. Before Jen could react, she said, “I’m okay. It just slips once in a while. Don’t worry about it.”

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Jen pulled back to look Terri in the eye. “You need to take it easy. Come here. Lie down with me.”

“I could do that.” Terri happily complied while Jen patted the comforter. Once on her back, Terri pointed to her shoulder.

“You, right here.” Jen snuggled in as instructed and made a happy noise. Terri thought it was the most wonderful sound she’d ever heard. She closed her eyes, and for the first time in a very long time, she let go of the past and thought about the future. Only this time, Terri wasn’t afraid. She had hope. She had Jen.

“So, Agent McKinnon, what happens next?”

Terri smiled. “Anything you want, Dr. Rosenberg.”

  “Cool.”
