Suddenly someone took my arm, I looked up to see my dad, smiling down at me.
‘Shall we do this princess?’
I stared at him and back at Harry who was looking at me anxiously, standing next to a very official looking lady. I looked down at my silvery pearl dress and the flowers I was holding in my hand. My earrings, my dress, my boots, my Tangalooma necklace and it hit me; my something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. I was getting married today and I’d had no idea that I had been planning my own wedding for the last two months.
I strode up the path towards Harry and my dad hurried at my side to keep up with me.
‘This is what you were planning, all this time?’
He nodded. ‘Do you hate it?’
I stepped forward and wrapped my arms round his neck, kissing him hard. His hands were at my waist, pulling me closer to him. The crowd cheered and laughed and I pulled away slightly, suddenly aware that we had an audience.
‘I love it,’ I whispered and a sudden burst of excitement ripped through me. ‘I absolutely love it.’
A polite cough from the woman made me pull away completely.
‘It is normally customary to wait till after the ceremony for that bit,’ she said and everyone laughed.
‘Baby, this is Kelly, our registrar and the lady I was meeting that day.’
I smiled at her and my stupid mistake.
I looked around at the small cluster of friends and family that had made it out on this cold wintery night, at the snow, the flowers, the photos telling our own little love story, at my favourite jazz band and at the man by my side who I was just about to marry. This couldn’t be more perfect.
‘Do you have the rings?’ Harry asked Badger and he pulled out two rings from his pocket. The rings me and Harry had made for each other at the jewellery workshop. I laughed.
Harry took my hand and pulled me gently in the direction of the registrar. ‘So Suzie McKenzie, will you marry me?’
‘Yes, one million percent yes.’
He grinned and as the registrar stepped up to start the ceremony, I leaned up to whisper in Harry’s ear. ‘This, Harry Forbes, is your most perfect proposal ever.
