Breaking Deluce Page 4

by Chad Campbell

A loud splash behind Damon and Mona sent water soaking their backs. They both turned around to see Jason. His pupils were glowing bright red, his face filled with rage. Damon knew something was wrong and he tried to pull Mona behind him. “Get away from her!” Jason screamed as he thrust his fist forward, hitting Damon in the chest.

The blow lifted Damon off his feet, sending him flying over the waterfall into the water below. “Damon!” Mona shouted as she watched him fall into the shallow water below. “You monster! How could you!”

Mona balled up her fist, throwing her first punch ever. She hit Jason as hard as she could in the stomach. “Ow!” she hollered—punching him felt like punching a brick wall.

Jason reached out and grabbed Mona around her neck. He gripped her firmly as he lifted her into the air. He slowly walked forward as she hung helplessly. Hanging over the edge of the cliff, she just looked into his eyes and choked out, “Why?”

The red in Jason’s eyes flickered for a second before he answered, “Because I have to. My master commands it.”

Jason pulled her closer, but as he was about to throw her over the edge, he loosened his grip and Mona spoke to him. “You are stronger than this. Don’t let him control you.”

The words cut right through Jason and he froze in his tracks. His eyes flickered red before finally returning to their natural brown. He smiled, and then he looked down at her as he set her down and said, “You’re right. Thank you.”

When Jason turned around he found himself face to face with the doctor. The doctor sighed, “Another failed experiment.”

The doctor reached behind his back, pulling out a silver dagger. He shoved it into Jason’s stomach. Jason clutched at the dagger but the doctor just put his boot into Jason’s chest, sending him falling over the cliff. “I’ll show you how to kill, son,” the doctor taunted.

Mona had just recovered from Jason choking her when the doctor grabbed her by the throat, squeezing even harder than Jason. She started to panic; she could no longer breathe. Struggling to get free, she could feel the blade taped to her back coming loose. She tried to reach for it but it had fallen right in the middle of her back where she couldn’t quite reach it. The more she wiggled, the more the tape peeled away. She struggled until she felt the blade come loose, as it fell into her hand. She stopped struggling as she drove the blade deep into the doctor’s forearm. The doctor just laughed, “Aww, poor child, did you think that tiny blade would save you? It’s too bad for you I don’t feel pain.”

Mona grabbed the blade, yanking it out of the doctor’s bloodless wound. She stabbed the doctor in the pit of his elbow. His strength disappeared from his hand as she fell to the ground, rolling dangerously close to the cliff. “Yeah, but you still have tendons,” she taunted.

“You bitch!” the doctor screamed. “It’s a good thing I only need one arm to kill you.”

The doctor lunged at Mona with his good arm. Just when he was about to shove her off the cliff, there was a flash of blue light and his arm fell to the ground.

The doctor and Mona looked up to see Damon standing there soaking wet, his sword ready to slice the doctor in half. The whites of his eyes had turned blood red. The doctor flung his bad arm upward to block as Damon swung. The blade glided through doctor’s arm like it wasn’t even there. The doctor fell onto his back, his cauterized stubs flailing around as he struggled to get onto his feet. Once on his feet, the doctor had the strangest look on his face.—though he was standing there armless, he didn’t look worried at all.

Damon raised his blade to strike him down and the doctor just smiled as he dove over the cliff. He bounced off the cliff face a few times as his cauterized wounds were ripped open but still no blood fell. He flipped and twisted as he hit the water face first with a “Slap!”

Slowly sinking into the shallow water, he disappeared from Damon’s vision.

Damon reached out to Mona. “Come on, I have to get you out of here,” he said.

Mona grabbed his hand and nodded in agreement. They started running away when they heard a loud thud behind them. Damon turned and saw the doctor standing there; both of his arms had regrown. The doctor ripped off his tattered shirt, revealing his heavily scarred body. “I’m going to rip you in half boy, and then I’m going to take my time with your sweet little girlfriend.”

Damon looked at Mona and threw his car keys to her. “Run!” he shouted.

Mona hesitated, but one glance at the doctor’s evil glare and she started running for it.

Damon turned back towards the doctor, who was already charging full speed at him. Damon tried to swing at him, but he was fast and caught Damon unexpectedly. He blocked Damon’s swing as he grabbed the boy by the wrist, slugging him hard in the stomach, and throwing him through a tree.

The doctor slowly walked over to Damon, who was struggling to rise to his feet. Damon raised his sword to defend himself but the doctor just smacked it away. Sending it flying into a tree, the blade pierced clean through the tree up to its hilt.

The doctor reached down and grabbed Damon by the throat. “I wasn’t kidding when I said I was going to rip you in two,” the doctor threatened. “But first I am going to beat you to a pulp.”

The doctor picked him up and his nails dug into Damon’s skin, drawing blood. Damon couldn’t breathe. “Oh, no, you don’t get to pass out that easy,” the doctor said as he balled up his free hand into a fist.

The doctor dropped Damon and slugged him as hard as he could in the chest. Damon flew backward, clutching at where the doctor had hit him. It felt like the doctor’s fist was buried in his chest. The pain quickly vanished from his chest as his back crashed through tree after tree; finally, he tumbled to the ground. He tried to rise to his feet, but the pain was too much and he collapsed. He knew he had lost and was about to experience one of the most gruesome deaths a human could experience.

The doctor had a huge smile on his face as he strolled on over to Damon. He took his time; he knew Damon was beaten and unarmed—completely helpless.

The doctor stood over Damon, who was lying face down in the dirt. He gave him a swift kick in the ribs, causing him to roll over. “I want to look you in the eye as I kill you,” the doctor taunted.

The doctor grabbed Damon by his wrists, raising him into the air. Damon dangled there and lifted his head up to look the doctor in the eye. The doctor was staring right back at him. “You know, this brings back memories. I think it was ten years ago. A hunter by the name of Hoch Jager had been tracking me for miles,” the doctor explained before interrupting himself. “Oh, weird, that’s your last name too, isn’t it. Was he a relative?”

“That was my grandfather,” Damon coughed out. “So you’re the monster who took him from me. I made a promise to avenge his death and I swore I would.”

“Well now it looks like you are going to share his fate.”

The doctor started pulling on Damon’s arms, straightening him up. Using the momentum, Damon kicked hard into the doctor’s chest, sending the doctor stumbling backward onto his backside. Damon fell to the ground, bouncing off and back onto his feet. The doctor jumped to his feet and looked at Damon.

Damon’s eyes were now blood red with pitch-black pupils. “Oh, still got a lil’ fight left in you—and I can see why. Been consuming demons’ blood, have you now?” the doctor mocked. “Demons’ blood or not, you will be crushed by my hand.”

The doctor lunged forward and swung at Damon, who easily dodged it. The demons’ blood, activated by his rage, had put Damon on an even playing field with the doctor.

Damon ripped off his shirt as his blood began to boil. Steam rose from his skin as he stood ready for the doctor’s next attack.

The doctor reached down and with each of his gigantic hands grabbed rocks the size of soccer balls. He leapt high into the air before falling right at Damon. Damon tried to step back but the doctor hurled a rock, forcing Damon to leap forward to dodge it. The second rock followed shortly after the first one, nailing
Damon square in the back.

Damon couldn’t move as the doctor came slamming down into his back. He screamed out in pain as the doctor didn’t let up and proceeded to pound Damon into the ground.

Grabbing the ground and slowly pushing himself up, Damon shouted, “I will not fail!”

Damon pushed with all of his strength throwing the doctors balance off as he stumbled back. They both quickly composed themselves as Damon made the first move with a quick right cross to the doctor’s face. The doctor backed slowly away as Damon continued with a barrage of punches before slipping inside on the doctor. He grabbed the doctor’s arm as he threw him over his shoulder and into a tree.

The tree cracked as the doctor collided with it, breaking in half and falling away as the doctor slid to its roots. Damon grabbed one of the soccer ball-sized rocks with both hands. He raised it high into the air as he ran forward at the doctor. He brought the rock crashing down hard into the doctor’s head. He repeated this over and over until the doctor’s head was no longer recognizable and looked more like a smashed-in pumpkin than anything.

Damon dropped the small boulder and turned away as his eyes returned to their normal shade of ice blue. He stumbled forward, then fell to his knees. He could feel his body cooling down as the demon’s blood left his system. When the power of the demons’ blood left his body, he was overcome by sheer exhaustion, collapsing face-first into the dirt.

Damon was woken up by a large foot slamming down on his chest. He could barely breathe as he looked up at the doctor’s misshapen face staring down at him. He tried to move but the doctor’s foot firmly held him down.

The doctor started laughing, “Your grandpa fell for the same trick.”

The doctor reached down and grabbed Damon’s arms. He started pulling on them as Damon screamed. He could feel himself being pulled apart. He looked to the sky, fearing that this was truly the end—but then, without warning, the pain stopped.

Damon thought he had to be dead but he could still feel the doctor’s giant foot on his chest. He looked up at the doctor and could see the blade of his sword sticking through the doctor’s chest.

The blade began to glow a bright white. The doctor screamed and grabbed at the blade, but as his hands touched the blade, they too begin to glow white. The white light spread completely over the doctor’s body. A slight gust of wind blew through the trees and the white light flaked away, taking pieces of the doctor with it. As the doctor slowly flaked to pieces a strong gust of wind kicked up and blew away what remained of the doctor.

Damon looked up and still standing there, holding his sword, was Mona. The sword’s aura was now a bright white. He looked at her and said, “You’re one of them.”

“What do you mean one of them?” Mona asked.

Mona looked down and saw that Damon had passed out. She dropped the sword and fell to his side yelling, “Damon!”

Mona checked Damon’s pulse as she held his head. His pulse was strong so she laid him down to rest, then rose to her feet and started walking toward the waterfall. When she got there, she looked down and saw Jason’s body lying face-down on the bank of the creek. “Jason!” she shouted as she looked for a way to get down to him.

Mona found a path that led downwards, but she had to go around a large plateau that surrounded the waterfall. When she got down to the banks of the creek, Jason’s body had vanished. She looked around for him but there was no sign of him anywhere. She wondered if she was crazy, perhaps seeing things that weren’t there, when she saw something shiny in the water. Kneeling down, she could see the dagger the doctor had stabbed Jason with. She grabbed the dagger and headed back to Damon.

When Mona reached the top of the waterfall, she saw Damon’s body was gone. “Damon!” she shouted.

Mona’s voice echoed, but there was no reply. She was all alone—except for where Damon’s body had been: his sword was stuck in the ground. She reached into her pocket and found his car keys were still there, then slowly approached the weapon. When she pulled the sword out of the ground and examined it, she noticed an inscription along the blade. Quando la luce di dio ritorna, questa lama si illumine di bianco.

Mona couldn’t understand it, but she guessed it had something to do with being chosen. She just didn’t know what she was chosen for. All she knew was she had to find Damon.
