Lisa
Daddy was sitting behind his desk, glaring at my bags while I stood in front of him, trying to keep my head held high.
“You are not going anywhere, Lisa,” he roared and I saw him clench his jaws with anger.
This was a mistake. I shouldn’t have come here, to his office. I should have gone directly to the airport, and now I was going to miss my flight. But how could I just leave without visiting him? Without saying goodbye?
“I have my tickets, I have my trip planned, I’m going,” I managed to squeak.
Even though I was a twenty-two-year-old adult, I still had a hard time standing up to my father. He’d always known exactly what to say and do to make me feel very small.
Now, he breathed in deeply, shook his head and ran a hand through his balding grey hair.
“I don’t know where you got this idea that you can just get up and leave on a whim. What makes you think you don’t need my permission?” He asked through gritted teeth.
In all these years, I had done very little to ever defy him. I’d tried to be the model daughter to him, to always do as I was told and make him proud of me. This was the first time I was making a decision for myself, all on my own, because I’d had enough.
“I’m an adult, Daddy. I went to business school just like you wanted, I studied hard to make you proud and this is the first time I’m doing something just for myself,” I said, trying not to shake while he glared at me with his menacing angry eyes.
“Just for yourself, huh? You seem to forget that you’re as responsible for this company as I am. As my daughter, you are going to be in-charge when I’m gone. You can’t waste time traipsing around Europe when you should be here learning the ropes and getting involved in this business!”
Daddy banged his fists down on his desk with a thump and jumped out of his chair. His face had turned red with anger. If he could, I knew he would have punished me—sent me to my room and locked my door, to keep me in. But he knew he couldn’t. I wasn’t a little girl anymore. We both knew that I had every right to go on this trip and there was nothing he could do about it… except, emotionally blackmail me.
“I didn’t ask for these responsibilities, Daddy. You know I’ve never been interested in this business. I want to help, and I will help… but not right now, not before I’ve experienced this journey,” I replied, trying to keep my cool.
Traveling solo around Europe had always been a dream of mine. I knew my father would never encourage a trip like that, or fund it, and so I’d been saving for it for the past six years. Putting money away from my own personal savings from part-time jobs. I’d been planning this trip since I was fifteen and now finally, I had the chance to see it through. I wasn’t about to let my father’s rage hold me back.
“If you go, Lisa, you’ll be making a big mistake. You’re needed here. This is where your duty lies,” he continued to growl. I could feel tears threatening to bubble up to the surface. Duty, honor, responsibility, family—these were all words that he’d used all through my life to make me dance to his tune. Without the support of a mother, I had no choice but to follow his command. Not anymore. I was going to put my foot down this time.
“I’m sorry, Daddy, if you think I’m doing something horribly wrong. I wish you could see things from my perspective, but now I know that you never will,” I said.
He rushed around the table, lunging towards me. I gasped when he grabbed me by my shoulders.
“Lisa, I only want what is best for you. Your place is here, beside me at this company. I’ve been looking forward to you graduating so I can finally ease my burden,” he said, peering into my weak eyes. I kept my chin up.
“You have a host of capable employees here, Daddy. You don’t need me,” I replied. Then slowly, I began to pry his fingers off my shoulders and bent down to pick up my bags.
“I’m sorry, Daddy, but I’m going. I’m sorry if you think I’m letting you down but this is my life. If I don’t do this now, I will regret it forever,” I said to him.
He couldn’t do anything anymore, other than stand back and watch me walk to the door.
“If you think I’ll ever forgive you for this, Lisa, that I’ll just forget about it; you’re mistaken,” I heard him say and I stopped to turn to him at the do
or.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me, Daddy. I expect you to someday understand why I’m doing this,” I replied. He remained silent. I could see the burning anger in his eyes and I gulped. Walking away from him like this was the hardest thing I ever had to do.
“Goodbye, Daddy. I’ll see you in four months,” I said.
When I was out of his office, I ran to the elevators and then down to the cab that was waiting to take me to the airport.
It was only when I was sitting inside, being driven through New York’s unrelenting traffic to JFK; that I realized that he hadn’t asked me where I was going. All he knew was that I was going to Europe and that I’d disappointed him.
I tried to get rid of that nagging feeling in my soul that I’d done something today that would forever be a strain in our relationship. I couldn’t get rid of it though, because no matter how badly I wanted to be my own individual self… I still loved my father.

Lyra stood up from the barstool and she had that look in her eyes. I knew she was going to drag me to the dance floor. I picked up my glass of whisky and held it to my lips as a weak excuse.
I watched her flip her precious blond hair over her shoulders, she was beginning to walk backwards, stretching her arms out towards me to get me to follow her. She was already swaying to the thumping electronic music playing in the club. The music was nauseating. I would have killed for some smooth jazz right about now.
I drank my whisky, while Lyra said something. I couldn’t hear her over the loud noise all around us. She crossed her brows when I didn’t stand up, then she threw herself at me.
“C’mon, Julian, dance with me!” She leaned into my ear to say.
“I’m good, thanks,” I said and she rolled her eyes.
“Fine. Sit here if you want. I’m going,” she snapped and walked away from me, moving her body to the tune. I watched her squeeze her way through the throngs of people till she was near the center of the dance floor.
The only reason I could still see her in the crowd, was because she was wearing a silver sequined crop top that stood out, and also because she was nearly six feet tall. It was no surprise that a girl who looked like her was a supermodel. The clothes she was wearing nearly fell off her bony shoulders. Her legs in that mini leather skirt looked like flag posts. She had a body most women would die for. And I knew all male gazes in that club were on her now.
But I couldn’t bring myself to join her on that dance floor. I just wasn’t in the mood.
A couple of years ago, I would have followed her there, I would have lost myself in the music and the booze. My hands would be all over her small perky breasts and under her leather skirt, seeking out the wet warmth of her core. Right now, I was bored. Of the music, the crowd and the hype, and most of the women at this place, including Lyra.
I’d known her for a little over two weeks, this was our third date and already I was trying to think of ways to break up with her. The sex was good. No. The sex was great. She was a celebrity in New York and had an incredible body… but somehow, these things didn’t seem to be enough for me anymore.
I watched her now as a man put his arms around her exposed waist, leaning in to her as she swayed in his arms with a flirtatious giggle on her lips. It didn’t bother me. We weren’t exactly in a relationship. I was just banging her, but still it should have bothered me seeing them together. It didn’t.
As I sat there, I didn’t care what she did on the dance floor. I was simply counting down the minutes till we could get out of this noisy sweaty hell hole.
Lyra returned to the bar some time later, panting and out of breath from her vigorous dancing.
“What are you doing? Why aren’t you out there? C’mon, don’t be such a bore!”
I turned to her with lazy eyes. I’d already had enough of this place.
“Wanna get out of here? We could go to my yacht or just for a walk or something?” I suggested, but I already knew what the answer to that was going to be.
Lyra stared at me like I’d offered her some rat poison to eat.
“Are you kidding me? You want to leave this place now and go for a walk?” She asked and rolled her eyes. I continued smiling at her. It was so obvious that we weren’t on the same page and that didn’t bother me anymore.
“Okay, so I’m going to go,” I said, and got up from the stool. Lyra looked mildly annoyed now, she couldn’t believe this, though I’d seen it coming from miles away.
“This was supposed to be a date, Julian. You’re just going to leave?” She screamed over the music.
“No, I’m asking you to come with me. We’ve been here for the past two hours and you have loads of company anyway,” I said, and tipped my head towards the dance floor. There were guys waiting for her, I could see them from the corner of my eyes.
Lyra crossed her long arms over her breasts and scrunched up her face.
“The only reason I’m dancing with them is because my date is being an old bore!” She snapped.
I still couldn’t stop smiling. It was because the truth had suddenly just hit me—this wasn’t what I was looking for anymore. Lyra didn’t fit the bill.
I leaned in towards her and kissed the top of her forehead.
“I’m sorry, Lyra, but I think we should stop seeing each other,” I said, stepping away from her again.
“Duh!” She snapped and whipped away from me. I could sense she wanted to have the last word. She wanted me to watch her walk up to those guys again and mould herself to their bodies.
I turned from the dance floor and quickly weaved my way out of the crowd and out of the club.
Now that I didn’t have a date for the night anymore, I felt free. I did go for that walk, but by myself. I loved New York City at night, and as I walked, I thought about what I wanted. Now I knew for sure what I didn’t want—my old lifestyle, but I was yet to find out what I could replace it with.
For now, I was satisfied not knowing and just enjoying my time alone. I was in no hurry at all.

Lisa
I’d arrived in Dublin two days ago and I still couldn’t get over the feeling that I had to go back to New York.
Ireland was on the top of my European destinations list and I planned on spending at least two weeks here before taking the ferry to France. I checked myself into a cute little B&B in the city center and I’d spent the past two days exploring the beautiful historical city.
I’d never done anything like this before… it was all new to me. I was alone in a new country, in a city that was bustling with tourists and other than a map, I had nothing else to support me.
In the first two days, I felt a little lost. I was worried that I’d feel too lonely and I wouldn’t know what to do, but pretty quickly, I started to realize that this was exactly what I needed. Dublin was full of friendly people and a kind of warmth I’d never experienced before. I’d lived all my life in New York and comparatively, Ireland felt like a loving embrace from an old friend.
Within the third day, I fell into a rhythm. I’d wake up early in the morning and with my map in hand, I’d go exploring around the city. I saw castles and walked in beautiful parks and fed seagulls and ducks. I walked as much as I could because I wanted to see everything, and eventually late in the evening, I’d return to the B&B for a quick shower before bolting out again.
The nightlife in Dublin was alive and every corner contained a lively pub or bar. I indulged in a few drinks, making friends with strangers and having freeing conversations with people I’d never meet again.
This trip was bringing me out of my comfort zone. It was forcing me to experience things I’d never tried before and at midnight, I’d return to the B&B feeling more alive than I’d ever felt.
On my third night, I sat outside a pub with a pint of beer in my hand. I’d never been a beer drinker, sticking to cocktails instead… not that I drank much to begin with. Here in Ireland though, it would have been an insult to drink a
nything other than the large variety of beer they had on offer on tap.
A guy was standing beside my table, smoking a cigarette while an Irish folk band played inside. There was a smile on my face because I was just so happy. Slowly, I was beginning to forget about my father and all the ways in which I’d disappointed him.
The guy looked at me and I met his eyes.
“Hello, there. Do you mind if I sit with you?” He asked.
I noticed his thick Irish accent, and it charmed me instantly.
“Go ahead,” I said and he sat down beside me, still puffing away at his cigarette.
“Something tells me you’re a tourist,” he turned to me again and I smiled, blushing.
“Do I really look that lost?” I asked and he laughed.
“No, you have an American accent. You don’t look lost at all. Why, are you?” He said.
“I don’t think so. I feel quite at home here, so it must mean something,” I replied.
“I’m Cian,” he said and our eyes met again. He was holding my gaze firmly. He had the greenest of green eyes and a thick mop of red curls. There was no denying that these Irish men were sizzling hot and nothing like most of the guys I knew in New York.
