Managing the Apocalypse

Melissa grabbed Carl's hand and smiled. He looked at her confused, and whispered, "What's going on?" She quietly shushed him.
Kera summoned her courage and looked her lover in the eyes. "Brody, I love you so much and I can't imagine my life without you."
Brody smoothed some of her stray hair behind her ear and caressed the side of her face. "I love you too. What's this about?"
"In this day and age, you never know how much time either one of us has and I want to spend all of it with you." She looked into his eyes. They might as well have been alone. "Will you marry me?"
Brody smiled as if he didn't know where this was going the entire time. He squeezed her hands and then looked above her head at the reverend who was paying close attention. He looked back down at her, "What? You mean, right now?"
Kera had a single tear rolling down her face. She suddenly reached up and wiped it away. She nodded, "Yes, if you'll have me. I promise no one will ever come between us ever again. And I'll always put you and the children before myself, always."
Brody stopped smiling and shook his head slightly. "I'm sorry, Kera. But I can't take that deal." He watched as the glow faded away from her face and the nervous tears that she had been shedding turned to ones filled with sorrow. They streamed down her face as she let go of his hands and went to step away.
Everyone in the room suddenly looked anywhere except at them. Martha covered her mouth.
Brody grabbed Kera by the shoulders and held her still, then he tipped her chin up to him, and looked into her eyes. "Put the children first, before me, and I'm all in." She exhaled loudly and hugged him.
"So, that's a 'yes' then?" Reverend Lewis asked.
Brody didn't take his eyes off Kera, "Yes."
The reverend put his hands in his pockets and smiled. "Sounds good to me. Now that the bride and groom have said their vows," he looked around the room, "does anyone have rings?"
Brody put his index finger up to the ceiling, "Excuse me for a sec." He quickly ran down the hall and into his room while everyone watched after him. There was a sound of a drawer opening and then being slammed shut and then Brody came speed-walking back out of the room and stood next to Kera again. He had a little black box in his hand. "I got these from the raiders a couple of weeks ago." He opened the box and took the rings out. He gave his to her and they both looked at the reverend.
"Okay, Brody, put the ring on Kera's finger and repeat after me," the reverend watched as he put the ring on her finger, "With this ring, I thee wed."
"With this ring, I thee wed." Brody repeated as he looked into her eyes.
The reverend turned to her, "Kera?"
Kera pushed Brody's ring on his finger. "With these ring, I thee wed."
"You may now kiss the bride."
Brody leaned down and kissed Kera. A first it was a small light kiss, but that wasn't enough. He suddenly picked her up and she wrapped her legs around his waist as they kissed passionately. Everyone clapped and cheered but they didn't stop kissing.
Dr. Wallace intervened, "Okay, kids. You need to go next door for the night." He opened the door for them. Brody stopped kissing Kera long enough to walk forward and out into the hall. She still had her legs firmly wrapped around him. The doctor smiled, "Go on now, have a good night." He shut the door, leaving them out in the hall alone.
They kissed as Brody awkwardly carried her down the hall to the doctor's apartment. He leaned her up against the wall and pressed himself against her while he fiddled with the doorknob until he got it open. She kissed his neck as he brought her inside and closed the door.

The next morning Brody and Kera prepared to go out looking for the missing children, and hopefully also find Charlie. Melissa and Carl appeared behind them holding their guns. Brody pointed at them, "We aren't going to use those anymore. Unless we have to." He took out a funny looking gun. "Look, Martha brought these tranquilizer guns. She says they will drop a Link almost instantly, but it won't hurt them." He handed one to each of them. "We're going to go in, find the kids, and bring them home. Simple as that."
Brody and Kera headed for the cab of the truck. She looked at her new husband, "Promise me that no matter what happens to me, you'll find my grandson?"
"It'll always be at the top of my to-do list." He opened the door for her. "And he's my grandson now too. And nothing is ever going to happen to you. Ever."
She climbed onto the sidestep and turned around to kiss him. "Of course not. Then who will suck on your finger?"
He smirked, "dirty."
"You're dirty!"
