“Oh, Sweetheart!” he cried, squeezing her to him. “I longed to hear you say it again. I was afraid you’d only said that because you thought I was dying. I wondered if you had truly meant it.”
He drew back and gazed at her lovingly. “I love you, too. I have for a long, long time.” He wiped at her tears with his finger.
“Read the paper carefully, out loud.”
Hating to take her eyes from his, Amanda finally looked down at the paper and read slowly:
This ticket books round trip passage for two on January 30, 1851, returning on April 17, 1851 on the ship Yellow Rose, bound for San Francisco. Sleeping quarters will be the bridal suite, and the ship sails promptly at dawn. Merry Christmas. Signed, Stewart and Margaret Sterling, who shall hereafter be called Mom and Dad.
“Oh, Luke!” Amanda exclaimed. “How lovely!”
“Wait!” Luke laughed. “I can’t let Mom and Dad do all my work for me.” He slipped down upon his knees, looked up at her lovingly and whispered, “Will you marry me?”
“Yes!” she whispered back. “I thought you’d never ask!”
