Stumptown Survival: The Complete Collection Page 19

Suddenly, Lily was trying to get their attention without making noise. Light had finally wiped out the darkness and she could see something, someone moving toward the west, the way toward the museum. Paige was the first to notice Lily’s attempts at getting their attention. She shook her head at Lily not sure what the woman was trying to say. Finally, Lily vigorously pointed in the direction of the cliff, just to the south of the museum. With a repressed gasp, Paige grabbed Dylan’s arm and pointed toward the movement. They could all see Vanessa’s hair blowing in the breeze and it was obvious she was being carried very carefully down the hill. A little further up, they could see movement, shapes of bodies, but could not tell who or what it was. They had not heard any shots in a while; still, that was not a definite sign that there were no other survivors.

They watched the movements and soon Lily was again trying to get their attention. She was giving them a thumbs up, so clearly she could tell the figures were other survivors, and not zombies. The trio silently prayed that Mason and Claire were among them. The figures were working their way down the hill much faster than the person carrying Vanessa. One thing was certain; they knew to head to the barge and they were making their way as fast as they could. ‘It has to be Mason’, Dylan thought, ‘Please let it be Mason.”

Dylan stood on the pillar and looked over the area between them and the river. If they could make it to the water, they might be able to find a boat or a raft or something to get to the barge. If they had to swim, so be it, but they would have to huddle together afterward. At this time of year, the water could quickly cause hypothermia. His brain was already kicking into high survival gear, planning how to get them out of this and what their next steps would be. The two women looked at each other smiled. They stood up and surveyed the area as well, both ready to move when Dylan gave the signal. They were battered and broken, but they were still alive. They had a plan, and they would soon be joined by whatever survivors had made it.

Life would go on. Hope was alive once again.
