Revelations - Rise of the Inquisitor Page 28

by R. E. Graham

"I don't know what you are talking about. Inquisitor Titus and Vega were transferred here to investigate the disappearance of some children when we caught wind of Eva's people."

"The Shadow Man is dead. Along with Titus and Seneca."

"Who?" Aquilas asked as he too stopped his mech in place.

"I need to know Legatus, were you connected to all of this? Were you working alongside the Shadow Man?"

"I don't know who you are talking about. But for the death of my people, you will pay dearly. Enough words, you have made your decision."

With that, all of the mechs raised their weapons and opened fire.

The flurry of sudden damage twisted the large Spade around and it fell to its knees. Its left arm was severed at the shoulder from a shot of the Enforcer's focus lasers.

Warning alarms filled the tiny cockpit as system after system failed. Varius tried to make his WarMech stand but it stumbled back down and he blacked out. The KoP forces did not let up as multiple Sierras fired their missile racks into the dying Spade.

The massive series of explosions sent parts of the Spade in every which way. Aquilas signaled for the firing to cease until he could survey the damage. As the smoke began to clear there was nothing significant left of the Inquisitor's WarMech. The battle was finished.

  Chapter 38

  Cycle: 412 Month: 7 Rotation: 20

  Prefecture: Unknown

  Planet: Unknown

  Location: Unknown

Varius awoke to find his head ached terribly. He sat up in pain and also found that his ribs hurt incredibly bad as well.

The last he could remember was him sitting in his mech, now he found himself sitting in a bed in some empty room. The walls were a faded brown, and there was only one light that hung overhead.

Slowly he slid his legs out from under the pale blanket that had covered him. He carefully placed his feet onto the cold floor. As he stood, he took the moment to inspect his body for anything missing after the last battle.

Nope, seems to all be here. Really hurts all over though...

He realized that his gauntlet was gone, but thankfully his daughter’s bracelet was still on his wrist.

The lone door to his right opened and the two Keepers stepped in.

Liberty’s helmet vanished, but Knowledge just put his arms behind his back.

"I am glad to see you up" the bronze Keeper said with a small smile on her face.

"Where am I?" Varius asked as he gripped his right side with his hand.

"During the fighting, your mech was being bombarded by KoP forces. Before it was destroyed though, Kay was able to rescue you."

Varius looked to the blue Keeper with a degree of shock. "You saved me?"

"Look at it as a thank you for stopping the Shadow Man. Officially you are considered to be dead."

"But, how? The cockpit would be locked from the inside."

Knowledge merely stared at him as if he should already know the answer.

"I'm sorry, I should be thanking you" Varius said as he winced in pain.

"Liberty told me that you alone dealt with Titus, Seneca and the Shadow Man. How did you do it?"

"Well...I kinda had help. It's a long confusing story" Varius said as he sat back down on the edge of the bed.

"I have time" Knowledge said coldly.

"However..." Liberty interjected herself into the conversation. "...we want to ask you something."

  Varius' eyebrow arched. "Oh?"

"You undertook a tremendous task by pursuing the Shadow Man without you even realizing it. Then to discover that Seneca and other inquisitors were involved in corruption yet still to perform your duty is well...it isn’t something we encounter often enough" Liberty said as she reached behind her back with her left hand.

"What she is trying to say is that you did a good job here kid. And we don't run into too many citizens that do the right thing anymore" Knowledge said with a gruff voice.

"With that said, we would like to offer you the chance to join us."

It took several seconds for Liberty's comment to fully register. Varius blinked several times as his brain processed the statement. "You...want me to join you?"

The female Keeper pulled her arm back from behind her and held a large red amulet in her hand. Varius stood up and walked over to Liberty's extended hand. He grasped the amulet then looked at it with disbelief.

"So, the question is Damien Varius," Knowledge began, "will you choose to become the next Keeper of Truth?"

  Glossary

Revelations is set in a universe where humanity does not originate from Earth. As such, some of the terms we use in our daily lives is not quite the same that they use. I have included this section to help you better understand the words and their definitions without it slowing down the pace of the story.

Stonecrete: [stone-creet] Very similar to our modern-day concrete but much stronger and doesn’t break down as poorly with time.

Rotation: Equivalent to our 24-hour day. The length of a rotation is how long it takes any planet to orbit around its star.

Cycle: Equivalent to one cycle of rotations around a star.

Communicator: Similar to a cellphone with even more robust features and capabilities.

Standard: This is the primary language that citizens in the Corre Republic speak. Most other nations have Standard as their main language or at least teach their children so that they can still understand it.

Synthetic: A Synthetic is an Artificial Intelligence (or AI) that controls a humanoid like body that fought in the massive war for survival between the nations of humanity and The Collector.

ANE: After Near Extinction (or more commonly known as ANE) was a new epoch that began to signify humanity’s survival against the Syn Armada.

Cuso: [coo-soe] The currency used in the Corre Republic.

Overloader: Essentially a weapon that creates a small electromagnetic pulse used to temporarily disable electronics.

Prefect Major: The Prefect Major is the leader of the entire Corre Republic. There are many other positions under this rank that assist in ruling, but whatever the Prefect Major says goes. The senate plays the role of the legislative branch of the Republic’s government and can affect policy. While the senate is elected from the planets’ citizens, the Prefect Major is chosen from the other Prefects that rule the 10 prefectures.

Prefect: There are 10 prefectures within the Corre Republic, and one Prefect rules over the worlds within that prefecture.

Governor: A governor is the ruler over a world. There is one governor per world in the Corre Republic.

All Father: The omni-potent all-powerful god of The Will religion. It is said that the All Father created all life and existence. Success, power, strength and dominion is promoted highly in The Will’s holy book.

The Creator: With His voice He created all of existence. The Creator is the godhead of the Light Bringer faith and has been hated for a long time in the Corre Republic as it calls its believers to deny themselves unlike The Will religion that promotes self.

Stream: This is the Corre Republic’s version of our own internet.

Note from the author: R. E. Graham

I want to take a quick moment to thank you for taking the time to read my very first novel. For years I have wanted to explore the Revelations universe but was unsure of how to go about it. In 2017 I figured that if I didn’t just go for it, then I never would. I don’t want to find myself on my deathbed and feel regret for never going for my dream. But I cannot create this universe without thanking those who support it and to also extend a welcome to you if you are new to the stories of Revelations.
