Two Sides of Me

Page 30

by Nora Sarel

Many years went by before my mother told me that Tadeush had helped my father to plan our escape from the ghetto and find the right people to help us.

I told you earlier that Tadeush was a friend of my parents. He was a tall and handsome man that everybody liked. To this day, when I cough, the smell of the cough syrup he used to give me wafts into my mind and I remember the hard candy he’d pull from his trouser pocket, removing the cellophane wrapping, and handing it to me. “Abracadabra your cough will disappear immediately”, he would say and pat me on the head. A dear man, a Righteous Among the Nations. One doesn’t meet such people every day.
