“I want you to do what I asked you to do at Meadow Farm,” he replies. “You need to call Clive Douglas.”
He throws me a cell phone and then turns back towards the motorbike.
“I’ve got nothing to say to Douglas,” I shout. “What does he want?”
The passenger turns back to face me.
“Just call him, McMillan. His is the only number in the directory.”
He gets back on the bike and without another word the driver guns the engine and they disappear out of sight.
I stare at the phone for a second and then I scroll to the address book. There is no name, but as I was told there is one saved number. I touch the call button and after two rings the call connects.
“Sean, so good to hear from you.”
The sound of Douglas’ voice sends a shiver down my spine and when I don’t answer immediately, he speaks again.
“I guess this is a bit of a surprise to you. I can understand that.”
“You know possession of a cell phone in prison is a serious offence,” I tell him.
“Whatever, McMillan. I’m already looking at a mandatory life sentence, so ask me if I give a shit about having a few more years added on.”
“What do you want?” I ask him.
“I want your help to reduce my sentence.”
“Are you bloody kidding me? I wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire, Douglas. This conversation is over.”
“Whoa, whoa, McMillan! Don’t be so hasty. I don’t expect your help for nothing. I have information about another major cold case that could be of use to you. You help me and I help you.”
“You’re full of shit, Douglas. I don’t bloody need your help. I’m doing well enough on my own, thank you. Don’t contact me aga..”
“You would do well to listen, McMillan,” Douglas interrupts. “The Network might be all but done, but I still have reach, Sean. I still have influence, even in here.”
“And what’s that supposed to mean?” I ask him.
“It means, Sean, that I can get to you whenever I want. I can also get to DC Swain, but more importantly for you, I can also get to your bitch and her son. Think about that tonight. Think about that boy all alone and unprotected in hospital. Goodnight, Sean.”
