CHAPTER NINETEEN
The police surveyed the scene, roped off the cars with yellow tape, and asked a million questions. A young police officer identified himself as Officer Burton. He pulled out a notebook and sat opposite Scott and Grace in the living room where a paramedic had bandaged Scott’s hand.
Scott was amazed at how calm he was. He proceeded to explain the situation as well as he could without saying anything about psychic abilities.
“Who were the two dead men in Scott’s front yard?”
He said the two men had kidnapped him, thinking he was related to someone with lots of money, and held him against his will in Nashville. This fit well with Grace’s earlier story when she reported Scott was missing.
“Who did they think Scott was?”
Scott had no idea. He said one guy kept calling him, “Luke.”
“Does he know their names?”
Scott explained that they had not revealed much of their identities. Mr. Blackwell seemed to be the leader of the group. He didn’t know Kyle’s last name.
“What were they doing in Nashville? Could Scott find that location?”
They seemed to be manufacturing narcotics. They had lots of drugs and medicines around the house. Scott wasn’t sure where the house was but they may be able to find it under Blackwell’s name.
“Where did he get the Mustang?”
He explained that it belonged to Kyle and he had used it to escape. He drove straight to his home to prevent them from hurting Grace.
Grace listened intently to Scott’s story and repeated it almost verbatim when she was questioned.
When the sun broke out through the morning clouds, the police collected their things and drove away.
Scott and Grace closed the front door and sat back down on the sofa. They were exhausted. Gumby was, too.
“Know what?” Scott asked his wife.
“What?”
“Officer Burton is going to have twins.”
Grace chuckled and placed her head on his chest.
***
A few months later, Scott and Grace took Gumby to a nearby dog park. Several breeds of dogs frolicked in the large, fenced-in area. Gumby chased a Beagle around the park, his haunches tucked down low to the ground to gain speed.
Grace stayed in the fenced-in area and Scott took a walk around the trails that expanded out like tendrils to basketball courts, baseball diamonds, and skateboard ramps. He stopped about seventy-five yards away from the entrance of the park at a bench along the sidewalk.
A young girl, obviously pregnant, was sitting on another bench facing him. She wasn’t wearing makeup and it gave her a harried, nervous look. It also made her look old. Her hair was a mess, as if she hadn’t brushed it all day. The knees on her jeans were tattered and ripped. She clung to her purse as if it were the last thing she had in the world.
Scott asked softly, “May I ask you a personal question?”
She raised her head.
“When are you due?”
She sighed deeply. “About two more months,” she said.
“Do you know what you’ll have?”
“The doctor says it’s a boy. Of course, he could be wrong.”
Scott thought long and hard. “Yeah, I think the doctor’s right.” He spoke with the conviction of someone with knowledge.
“Guess I’ll find out then.”
“I have a pretty good feeling about these things,” Scott said.
She was beginning to look irritated.
“You know, I think he’s going to grow up to be a teacher.”
“Fat chance,” she said. “I ain’t even finished high school. You think my son will be a teacher.”
“No, you may be right. Not a teacher.” He leaned forward. “A professor. He’s going to teach at a big university.”
“Ha, ha. Mister. You must be crazy.”
“I’ve been told that before,” Scott said. “But you know, sometimes the crazy people—the ones who dream dreams and see visions…sometimes, they know things.”
The girl had a puzzled look on her face.
“Remember this,” Scott said. “He’s going to teach at a prestigious university.” He leaned back on the bench and looked toward the dog park. Grace was standing at the gate watching him talk with the pregnant girl.

About the Author
Tell stories.” It’s one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received. Stories inspire people to grow and expand their horizons. They entertain. They challenge. They comfort. Simply put, they make life much better.
I’ve been telling stories all my life. When I worked with youth years ago, I told stories that helped them understand, learn and develop. Later, as a corporate training manager I used stories to demonstrate examples, to encourage better business practices and to stimulate learning. As a college professor I found stories to be instrumental in challenging people to think and comprehend.
Today I continue to tell stories. You’ll find them in my nonfiction curriculum books and all of my award–winning novels. My hope is you’ll enjoy my stories and share them with your friends. Then, tell your own stories. It’s a great piece of advice.
