“I care about you and knew this trip would be important. The department doesn’t pay for personal companions. What did you want me to do?” Either a good fight or a fast fuck was in order to give him an edge, and since a fast fuck was out of the question, looked like they were going to have their first fight. “You want to talk, let’s talk.” He took a step toward her. “Let’s talk about the case. How much did you know about Elliot’s involvement with the Marino brothers?”

“Nothing. Why would the Marino’s think about me at all unless someone led them to believe I have information? Perhaps because I’m your prime suspect? I don’t understand what you’re doing. One minute you’re hot for me. We’re hot for each other. Then you pull back. I’m not a yoyo, and I don’t want to play games.”

“Our plan is to stay focused on the case.”

“That plan failed the first day you came to my house. If you wanted an excuse to keep your distance, you’ve found one. Assholes don’t interest me.”

  “Mickey,” he growled. “Fuck!”

She grabbed her purse, stalked to the bathroom, and shut the door. Dustin ran his hands through his hair. At least one problem solved. He didn’t want to fight, but carnal hunger had him by the balls. With every smile and bat of her lashes over her blue eyes, the fist tightened.

Shit. He wanted perspective but not a battle of wills. He knocked on the bathroom door. “Mickey, I’m sorry.”

  “You should be.”

“Are you going to sulk in the bathroom? If so, I’ll go out and get us something to eat.”

The door flew open. “I wasn’t sulking. Wait for me.”

He put his hand on her shoulder. “I am sorry. The trip isn’t a ploy to get you into bed for an easy lay.”

She snorted. “You don’t need a ploy.”

“And you aren’t a casual fuck. You can trust me.”

She looked into his eyes. “It’s you who doesn’t trust me.”

  “I do.”

“I’ve told you everything I know about Elliot, the case, the Marino’s.”

  He nodded. “Okay.”

“Okay.” She picked up her purse. “I’m hungry. And Detective, dinner will be my treat. You’ve paid for enough on this trip.”

Dustin groaned as he held the door for her. “Whatever you say.”

McKenna glared as she grabbed her purse. “Most men would expect a woman to put out after paying for a trip to Los Angeles. Why can’t you be like most men?”

“Careful Mickey, you’re starting to sound like Dawn.”

“Well, maybe you should act more like Tyson.”

Dustin checked the door lock and then pulled it closed. “Tyson tires of a woman after a few weeks and moves on.”

“And you want something more?” McKenna asked as they walked down the corridor.

  “Yes.”

As they left the hotel, McKenna decided to let the argument go. There wasn’t much more he could do to show her that he was on her side. Yes, she wished she’d known the details about the trip, but he was here, with her, trying to find answers to her mess of a life.

“How is it you know California so well?” McKenna asked later as they drove down Pacific Coast Highway.

“I lived here until I was a junior in high school.” He gave McKenna a wicked grin. “Found myself in a bit of trouble. Mom caught me with a little weed and panicked. Divorced, working full time, she couldn’t keep an eye on me. She sent me to live with my aunt and uncle in Utah. Thought I needed a male role model.”

“It worked. Now you’re on the right side of the law.” She looked up at the palm trees stretching to the sky. Their rough patterned bark and tropical crowns made her think of pina coladas and margaritas. “I’ve never been high. Never tried any drugs. It’s quite funny actually,” she said glancing at Dustin. “For someone who never breaks the law, I’m being accused of murder.”

“Then lying to police is a walk on the wild side for you?” He pulled into an open-air restaurant on the Hermosa Beach strand. “You’ll love this place.”

Sand covered the floor and wet swimmers sat at picnic tables, eating the fresh catch of the day with fries. A couple of teenagers still wore their rollerblades. On the walls, fishnets caught decorative shells along with pictures of celebrities who had patronized the restaurant over the past thirty years.

“Table inside or on the patio?” they were asked when they stepped up to the hostess.

“It’ll be chilly once the sun goes down,” Dustin said.

“I won’t mind,” McKenna said, thinking he could keep her warm if the breeze off the ocean became too nippy.

Seagulls walked under the tables, calling loudly to their feathered friends when they found a dropped French fry or crust of bread.

“This is nice.” With the roar of the surf, she felt isolated in the crowded restaurant. Dustin’s attention focused intently on her.

The food was divine, and while they ate, he opened up more about his life, telling her of his youthful jaunts. Finally, they sipped coffee after their meal. As the sun sank beneath the horizon of the ocean, the sound of the waves crashing against the beach became more acute. The air chilled enough to cause her to shiver.

“Ready?” Dustin set down his coffee and wiped his mouth. She nodded, and he came around the table and held her chair while she stood. Once he’d paid the tab, they left.

Dustin put the top up on the convertible for the ride back to the hotel. The streets bustled with activity. Shops were still open, and the local nightlife was getting underway. They passed a dance club. “Want to get a drink? Go dancing?”

She watched women wearing short dresses and high heels being escorted by men sporting neckties and Dockers. “I’d rather go back to our room.” She sighed and leaned back in the seat. “I want a shower. You’re right. Tomorrow is going to be difficult when we find Roslyn Meadows.” She covered her mouth while she yawned. “I guess I am ready for bed.”

The drive back to the hotel only took a few minutes. Once they were back in the room, she opened her suitcase and found her camisole and silky shorts. She grabbed her toiletries and excused herself to the bathroom.

She was in LA and, like Dustin had said, away from prying eyes. No Tyson to remind him of protocol and no Dawn to interfere and offer advice.

The hot shower rinsed away the stress but brought about a flurry of butterflies. There might be two beds, but she wanted in Dustin’s. Before she left the bathroom, she glanced in the mirror. Her unbound breasts shifted beneath the spaghetti strap top. Nipples prodded against the fabric, sending heat into her pussy. A steady throb left her damp and aching. If he couldn’t read the signals she was giving off, he needed a manual on women.

She stepped from the bathroom. Moist ocean air blew in through the open balcony doors. Dustin had his arms braced against the rail. The breeze ruffled his hair. She swallowed and anxiety skittered down her spine. While she’d showered, he’d changed into sweatpants—with no shirt. Tension knotted in his shoulders.

  “Hi.”

He turned at the sound of her voice and his gaze swept over her. “Hi.”

They stared at each other. Dustin ran a hand over his bare chest. Abdominal muscles tightened and his pectorals flexed. He was tightly controlled, yet desire smoldered in his eyes. Tied in the front, the sweats rode low on his hips and did little to camouflage his arousal.

“The shower is yours if you want it.”

“No, I think I’ll go down the hall to the vending machines. I know you’re tired.” He glanced to the beds.

“But I’m not sleepy,” she said.

Dustin took the room keycard from the dresser. “I’ll be back in a minute.” He walked out.

McKenna sighed and sat on the edge of the bed. “This is stupid. I need to either seduce him or go to bed and sleep off my frustration.” Grabbing the remote, she flipped through the channels. A few minutes later, Dustin returned and set the cans of soda on the table between the beds.

  “Should I call
the front desk for a seven a.m. wake up?” she asked as she popped the top of her drink.

“Sounds good.” Dustin leaned against the headboard. “Remote,” he said with his hand held out to her.

She clutched it in her hand. “I can change the channel. What do you want to watch?” She started surfing the channels again, pausing when she got to Lifetime. “I love this movie.”

“No way,” he interrupted her stroll down memory lane with Julia Roberts. “No chick flicks. Give me the remote.”

“I suppose you want me to find a shoot em’ up cop epic.” She started down the channels again. With one brow raised, she looked over at Dustin. “I’ve got one question, do you feel lucky?” She squealed as Dustin launched off his bed and onto hers. She laughed as they struggled for the remote.

“We compromise,” he said as he sat up with the remote. “Hey, what’s this?” he teased.

“Don’t you dare! I am not watching Candy loves Barbie!”

Dustin laughed and continued to look for something they both would enjoy. “James Bond?”

She nodded and took another sip of soda. Dustin reached over and grabbed two pillows from the bed he’d vacated and propped them alongside hers. Leaning back, he stretched his legs out. “Come here.” He patted the spot beside him.

First, she stood and turned off the lights. Then she crawled back onto the bed. Positioning next to him, her heartbeat thundered in her ears. She breathed in shallow rapid breaths, anticipating. Then he touched her. Rough calloused, fingertips caressed her bare shoulders. She sat up enough to allow his arm to wrap around and pull her close. Her hand rested on his bare chest. He was solid muscle and smelled incredible.

Shivers tingled over her flesh as his fingers absently trailed along her arm. She attempted to be just as subtle with her touches to his stomach and torso. Her panties were damp, and his cock swelled against the fabric of his sweats. She didn’t know about Dustin, but she watched the television having absolutely no idea what was happening in the movie.

In the dark of the room, her eyes grew tired. If he didn’t make a move soon she was going to be sleeping on his chest.

When the credits started to roll, Dustin turned off the television. Plunged into pitch black, he listened to McKenna’s even breathing. Curling against him, her arm laying across his stomach, he skimmed his fingers along her shoulder. He didn’t want to sleep. He wanted McKenna. His jaw tightened as he lay next to her. Faint fragrance of her shampoo drifted to his nose.

“Mickey,” he whispered while he gently turned her onto her pillow. She murmured a protest at the disruption and burrowed deeper into his neck. Warm sleepy softness curled around his body, and he groaned. He wouldn’t be able to sleep with her purring beside me. Hell, he doubted he’d sleep being in the same room with her.

“Dustin.” Her fingers spread across his chest. Tension gripped his abdominals, and then surged lower, hardening his dick and coiling in his tightened balls.

“Mickey, I don’t want to get out of this bed.” She continued to slide her hand lower, skating her fingertips along the edge of his sweats. Breath burned his lungs as she slipped inside.

  “Then don’t.”

Gentle pressure brushed his shaft. Blood rushed from his head, leaving him dizzy, and lengthened his cock another inch. He clenched his teeth, relishing in her tentative exploration. “Oh fuck.”

She curled her fingers around the base. “Stay in bed with me.” She bent over him, her hair a curtain over his chest. At the same time, she slowly stroked his taut length. He thrust into her fist, intensifying the pleasure streaking along his shaft and flashing like lightning into his sac.

Slack jawed, he nodded, unable to form words as she flicked her tongue against his flat nipples. Every muscle jerked at the erotic sensation of her wet cool tongue against his burning flesh.

Dustin lifted his hips, and she tugged his sweats down his thighs and off. He lay on the bed naked, in the dark. The mattress dipped as she shifted her position. Her hair tickled his thigh as she moved closer to his dick. He didn’t speak, afraid to break the spell weaving around them. Warm breath caressed his groin. Fuck, her lips had to be close to his cock.

“Put your mouth on me.” He couldn’t contain the ravaging lust firing through his body. His balls throbbed and his cocked strained upwards, rigid in need of her warm, wet mouth.

At the first touch of her velvety tongue, he hissed through clenched teeth. “Yes.” His cock throbbed, dripping cream. More fluids oozed down his shaft.

A soft chuckle rolled from her chest. Then liquid heat surrounded the crown. Grabbing his rod at the base, she held him upright and swallowed more of his length. Light suction tugged on the head.

Threading his fingers into her hair, he helped guide her head. She bobbed on his cock, sliding her mouth down the shaft then swirling her tongue over the corona. A soft hum in the back of her throat vibrated along his length.

“I won’t last.” He pumped into her mouth. Just a few more strokes of her delicious tongue then he pulled away. “Condom.”

  “I’m on the pill?”

  “What about sexual partners?”

  “It’s been awhile,” she whispered.

  “For me, too.”

In the dark, he sat up and reached for her. In choppy movements, he had her top off. What he couldn’t see in the dark, he discovered with his hands. Bracing his hands on her hips, he trekked higher, feeling each rib, reveling in the softness of her bared flesh. He cupped her breast, circled the full mound, then rolled her nipple until the tip tightened and elongated. “Beautiful.”

Urging her supine on the bed, he bent over her and took one nipple into his mouth. He sucked, tasting her breast. She moaned, arching off the mattress. Her responses heightened his desire. Using his tongue, he played with her nipple, pressing it between his teeth and the roof of his mouth.

“Touch me, Dustin.” Her hips rolled, emulating sex.

With a pop, her breast released from his mouth. He tugged her pajama bottom off. Hooking a finger in the elastic side of her thong panties, he inched them down. Once free of the barrier, her thighs fell open. The musky scent of her arousal hit him hard. Saliva flooded his mouth. Cupping a palm around each calf, he spread her legs wider.

“Dustin?” Her voice quivered in the dark.

“Shh.” With his lips, he traced a path along the inside of her thigh, then scooched her higher on the bed. Maneuvering between her legs, he laid on his side. “I need to taste you.”

With the first swipe of his tongue along her drenched curls, her heels dug into the bed and she thrust against his mouth. Grasping her buttocks, he lifted her, slicing the blade of his tongue along her slit. Dark, delicious flavor filled his mouth. Cream slicked along his lips as he used them to part her folds. Dancing his tongue over her hot inner labia, he searched each groove, dipped into each crevice.

Crooning her praise, she swiveled her hips, chasing his tongue as he licked, teased, and nibbled her clit. He moaned. His hunger for her built a rising tide of torrid heat. Long slow licks bathed her cunt. Muscles clenched and her hands fisted in the bedding as her head thrashed on the pillow. He drank her down, her juices soaking his face and trickling off his chin.

Her mewling pleasure shifted to gasping breath. He felt her climax in the quavering of her thighs and the burst of cream from her clenching slit. Devouring her tangy flavors, he opened wider over her mound and ferociously sucked, pressing and flicking his tongue against her erect, hardened clit.

Thighs snapped to his head and she came hard with a cry. He rode her orgasm, savoring every pulsing spasm. Her arched back collapsed to the bed and the squeeze of her legs lessened. She gasped deep inhales and blew out ragged exhales. Rising over her, he kissed a trail over her sweat-sheened tummy.

Braced above her, his left hand slivered along her side and brushed against her hip. Wrapping his palm around his thick shaft, he traced her slit with the blunt tip of his dick. Her hips arched, and he nudged her opening, t
easing her clit, and spreading her cream.

With his lips at her ear, he whispered, “I’ve wanted you since the first time you walked into the station.” Lunging hard, he shafted her cunt until his balls rested against the seam of her buttocks.

“God, yes.” She moaned with every soft gust of air from her mouth.

Dustin reared back and thrust hard between her gloving folds. Each plunge created a firestorm of emotion. She felt so good. Hot and soft. Yet she bucked against him, demanding and restless. Wet, slick tissues caressed his shaft. He focused on each nuance of her breathing, her body, meeting her needs.

He grabbed her right thigh and braced her leg in the crook of his elbow, then did the same with the left. Rising above her, using his legs for leverage, he forced her thighs high into her chest. The angle thrust his cock deep into her channel. Fast and hard, he brought her to the brink of orgasm. He rode the crest of release, plunging into her liquid sheath with fierce drives.

She writhed beneath him, riding a building wave of release. Incoherent praises begged him for more.

“Oh fuck. Oh fuck. Oh Dustin. Yes. Harder.” She anchored herself to the bed and to Dustin by grasping his arms. Half moon digs from her nails cut into his flesh. A devastating orgasm ripped through her body. Convulsions locked her tight to his shaft, her cunt milking his cock.

Muscles clenched, and he couldn’t hold on. Her orgasm abruptly sent him spiraling into oblivion. Fire raged through his groin. His cock pulsed, shooting hot jets of cream deep into her core. He continued the easy slide into her still quaking channel until the last of his orgasm robbed him of thought. He rolled to his side, drawing her into the circle of his arms.

  “Oh, my god.”

  “Good?”

“Incredible. I think I can sleep now.” She curled against him. He kissed her temple, combing a damp tendril of hair from her cheek. Emotions twisted in his gut. What had he done? He was exactly where he wanted to be—in bed with McKenna. He’d done something he’d never done before, he’d involved himself with a key person of interest in a murder investigation.
