If you like the Beat Series, check out Jared Garrett’s other book, Lakhoni!

Lakhoni has been left for dead. When the King's guards attack his village and slaughter his people, he regains consciousness only to find his sister has been taken captive.

Armed with only a bow, Lakhoni must traverse a brutal wilderness, face deadly warriors, and battle legendary tattooed assassins, all in order to save his sister's life. But along the way, he discovers the truth about his parents: they were not the simple villagers they seemed. Instead, they were hiding a great secret that goes back to the First Fathers and may determine the fate of the kingdom itself.

But Lakhoni isn’t the only one who wants the king dead. Ancient enemies are poised to strike while traitors poison the kingdom from within. With the life of the king and the fate of the kingdom hanging in the balance, can Lakhoni avenge his parents’ death without becoming a murderer himself?

  Acknowledgements

I wrote this book. All by myself. Acknowledgements go to me and me alone.

I’m joking, of course. Pretty funny, huh? Don’t you wish I wrote comedy? You don’t? Well, that’s okay, because I’m still going to first acknowledge you, my devoted and deeply attractive reader. Thank you so much for buying and reading my books! Thank you even more for buying a copy of each of my books for all of your friends and neighbors and even for that guy down the block who smells like avocados.

Do you wish I wrote comedy yet?

Okay, okay, I’ll stop asking. But since you asked, I also need to acknowledge Future House Publishing, starting with their former acquisitions editor, Helena Steinacker, for believing in my stories and me. Also, Emma Hoggan and Brooke Sorensen for their marvelous editing work, Ryan Mendenhall for marketing leadership, Zac Strickland for all the awesome, Ami Johansen and Heather Klippert Rubert for endless support and hard work on my behalf, and Adam Sidwell for opening and running such a daring independent publishing outfit. Party on.

I would acknowledge my agent, but I don’t have one. Are you in the publishing industry by any chance, and do you perhaps work as a literary agent for awesome authors? If so, Google me and be astounded.

I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the Sound Transit system that I ride on pretty much every work day to and from work. I wrote 60% or more of Push while commuting on that train. To the passengers whose elbows I bumped while carving out space to work on my laptop, apologies. And if you happen to remember all the twists in Push, keep quiet! No spoilers.

Writing a book while commuting has shown me what a person can do when they really set their minds to something. I completed the first draft of Push in three months between the train rides and late nights writing like a man possessed. I love this book. You love it too, don’t you?

My final acknowledgements go out to my family. To my kids—you’re awesome. Several of you and at least one of your goofy characters show up in this book and other books I write. You’re an inspiration. And to my wife, Annemarie, thank you for supporting me as I invest so much time and money into this writing dream. Your patience and endless support mean everything.
