“I do,” India said, and Xavier slid the gold ring onto her finger.

“And Xavier?” the priest said, his eyes sparkling. “Do you take India for your lawful wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?”

Xavier beamed, his face bathed with joy and peace. “I do.”

“I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the priest said, and everyone burst into cheering.

“Come, come,” Xavier said, grabbing India’s hand.

India giggled, letting him pull her along and away from the reception party in the living room. “Everyone wants us to cut the cake.” He pulled her along until they stood in the little gap between the hallway and the kitchen, a tiny nook where no one would notice them straight away.

When he turned to her his eyes were shining. “Just one second,” he said, reaching into his jacket and pulling out the notebook India had always seen him with.

“What is it?” she asked softly.

“Listen,” he said, then leaned in close, whispering as he read. “India, you asked where you fit in this world. I have been asking the same question all my life. When you leave your family, this life seems so big. There are so many places to go, things to do, people to meet. There are so many ways I could be. So many different identities you could have. So many lives to be lived. Seemingly endless possibilities. How can anyone choose? But when I met you, I knew the choice was made for me. You fit with me. I fit with you. We belong together. So remember, you are never alone. Never again are you facing the world by yourself. You have me by your side. And you are armed with magic, the Energy urging you onto greatness from every side. I never used to believe in magic. But now I’m living it. And I don’t know which is more magical, the spells we learn, or the love we have for one another. Together, forever. And if there’s reincarnations like Luis said, I want us to be together throughout them all. Those are all the things I mean when I say ‘I love you, Indie’. I hope you can hear them, echoing in those four small words.”

India’s heart felt like it would burst with happiness. She squeezed him with all the strength she had. “I love you, Zave. My best friend in all this world.”
