  “My man will go with you.” He tipped his hat. “Glad we could have been of service, Mr. James.”

  I stared at my husband. “You mean, you suspected Clay all this time?”

  He nodded. “Didn’t want to, but too many things weren’t adding up right. Thought I’d get the government man in to inspect the deeds of some of the land grants and then when Reynolds died – ,” he shrugged – ,“I knew it was only a matter of time before there was an investigation.”

  Once again, I felt as if I’d underestimated my husband. We sat there a moment as we watched the Marshall and his prisoner ride off.

  Only then did Logan turn to me. “Well, Elisa, you ready to go home?”

  I nodded. The word home sounded very fine indeed.

  As we started riding the rest of the way back, he reached out to touch my hand. “By the way, when’s the kid due?”

  I blushed. “How did you know?”

  Logan grinned and shrugged. “Something my Sioux grandmother taught me.”
