It’s all too much.
That’s the part he doesn’t say, but he doesn’t have to. I get it. I’ve been at the end of my rope before and I can see it in other people. Life experiences are good like that. And even though mine had nothing to do with divorce, the pain of losing someone is the same, regardless of who they are and how they left.
“What about Casey?” I offer, feeling only marginally bad for offering up my sister without her consent. “She’s been the best assistant I could ever ask for and she might not have a college degree to back her up, but she has me and loads of hands-on experience. I’d trust her with my life… I do trust her with my life.”
Pausing, I wait for a reaction, when Ross doesn’t budge, I continue. “Plus, you know her, so it might make it an easier transition. With Spring Training coming up so soon, you wouldn’t have to worry about leaving your affairs in the hands of a stranger.”
“It’s a good idea,” Bo chimes in, reaching under the table to squeeze my knee, in gratitude and approval. “What do you say?”
Ross sighs, emptying his wineglass and then sitting back in his seat, letting my suggestion marinate and just when I think he’s going to turn it down, he replies, “I guess.” It’s non-committal and detached, but it’s something.
