“Well, he’s talking to the crowds instead of you,” Benny said.
Carmela felt faint. “Surely not about me!”
“No ma’am. The way the marshal heard it, Holden’s doing lectures on his ‘Ordeal with an Outlaw Gang’.”
Speechless, Carmela turned to her husband.
Freeland’s lips twitched. “Doggone if he’s not creative. I’ll give him that. Benny, if you don’t have other plans, why don’t you stop at our house for supper tonight?”
“I’d like that,” Benny said. “Thanks. I’ll catch you up on the doings with the Pima and the Apache.”
“You do that.” Freeland smiled down at Carmela. “Now, sweetheart, let’s get our picnic. I’m about to starve.”
Carmela let out her breath and found she was able to smile back. “That sounds like a fine idea, Mr. McKay.” She took his free hand and walked out with him into the harsh sun.
