"Some Thoughts About the Book from the Author"
Chronicles of the Host is a novel about the events in Heaven begin-
ning before Lucifer's rebellion and following through to the disobedi-
ence of Adam and Eve in Eden. My intention in writing this book is not
to reveal what truly happened in Heaven (because nobody knows
except those who actually witnessed the events); rather, it is to take the
truth given to us in the Bible and build a story around it.
My hope in writing Chronicles is to create a compelling and
thought-provoking look at what happens when creature rises up
against Creator in the supreme folly of pride. Such rebellion is at the
core of all disobedience--it flies in the face of true power, which is root-
ed in God's established authority--and seeks to be empowered through
cunning and sheer self-will. This was the problem then, and it is the
same conflict being waged today.
In creating angel characters who oftentimes seem very human-
like, I was attempting to demonstrate that they, like us, are moral crea-
tures with the same freedom to choose that we have. Such freedom can
be abused by men or angels. Many angels chose to rebel and will ulti-
mately pay a terrible price.
Likewise, a scan backwards in the history of humans clearly
exposes the bloody choices that we have often made. Do angels do and
say the things depicted in this book? Is Heaven anything like it is
described in this book? I hope that as you read, you will see that the
point is not in the description, but in the principle.
Finally, in dealing with the Lord, I purposely hold any interaction
between Him and the other characters until the end of the book. At
whatever point the Lord is introduced, the story must shift dramatical-
ly. In other words, to introduce Him too early would be like calling the
game in the fourth inning. But, I believe you will see God speaking
loudly in His seeming silence throughout the book.
What is He saying? He is speaking of His long-suffering and
graceful nature; of His hope that repentance might come--that his crea-
tures will somehow return to Him. Often one misinterprets God's lack
of intervention for disinterest or inability to intervene on His part. He
deals with us in a manner similar to how He deals with angels: hoping
that we will get it right, but finally and forcefully stepping in when we
delay or ignore His subtle voice.
That said, I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I have enjoyed
writing it. I hope it will be a blessing to you and will make you think dif-
ferently about your approach to the Most High God--just as writing the

I beg You to take into consideration the following
account of those events which have taken place from before the
dark times until the fullness of the Son, which You, in Your
infinite wisdom, commanded be recorded as a perpetual testa-
ment and chronicle of the Host. It is an honor to serve Your
Holy Self in this capacity, and having been chosen for the task,
I determined that nothing should be left to speculation--that
all of Heaven should know of Your grace and justice.
I have spared no effort in my research, which has taken
me to the four corners of creation, in an attempt to uncover the
minutest detail. I have spoken at length with all of the actual
participants, as well as reported those things to which I was a
witness.
As a scribe, whose work involves gathering of facts, I
would have enjoyed the opportunity to speak with some of the
former subjects who now await their destiny at the end of the
age, but as their whereabouts are difficult to ascertain at a
given time; and since they are reluctant to speak to me for fear
of retribution; and because they are by nature liars, I have had
to content myself with the testimony of those who knew them
before the rebellion and who witnessed their gradual plunge
into the abyss.
To all who have aided me in this endeavor I am eternally
grateful. I also wish to express my deepest gratitude to Polias,
the librarian in the Hall of Record who helped detail the early
times of the Kingdom. And so it is with deepest regard for
Your Most Holy Person that I now dedicate these Chronicles
of the Host and surrender them to Your keeping. May they for-
ever proclaim, as all creation will one day proclaim, that You
alone are worthy; that all power in Heaven and on earth rests
with You.

Chapter 1
"Truly the Lord had marked
him for great things."
Lucifer peered over his balcony, brooding about the recent
developments in Heaven. He looked at the angels walking about the
city beneath him. Their forms shone different-colored auras, reflect-
ing the holiness within, the mark of their Creator. His eyes fell
directly below and he saw his own image on the golden street. He
studied the form staring back at him from the mirror-like pathway.
It was little wonder that Lucifer's name came to mean "light
bearer," the Star of the Morning, as he was without question one of
the most glorious creatures in Heaven. Lucifer's hair was his
crown, pouring over the back of his white cloak in a golden cas-
cade. His eyes were steely blue-gray, and could be both hard and
soft at the same time, a reflection of the keen intellect and self-
assurance he possessed. Lucifer cut quite a majestic figure, and his
majesty was never more apparent than when he was enrobed with
his special garments for most holy occasions.
He turned and walked along the balcony, nodding now and
then to an occasional angel who caught his eye passing on the street
below. Looking over the balcony once more, he continued to ponder
his image. It was only fitting that the Lord's chief angel of worship,

he who created and led the praises of the Most High, should reflect
so beautiful an image. Lucifer could not help but compare himself
to the other angels who milled about below him. Truly the Lord
had marked him for great things. And yet...
He turned his eyes toward the Great Mountain of the North,
where the presence of the Living God reigned in eternal brilliance.
All the paths of Heaven led to this glorious place and one could not
go anywhere in the Kingdom without casting a shadow because of
the radiance emanating forth. At times the light streamed down the
mountain, cascading like a glowing river, spilling into the streets of
the City itself as the angels basked in the glory of a Creator whose
presence was so pervading. Lucifer could only look for a moment,
a glance really, before he shielded his eyes from the spectacle. He
turned away.
"My lord," came a voice from inside the house.
No response.
"My lord," repeated the voice. Lucifer turned to see his chief
servant, Serus.
"Yes, Serus, what is it?" he asked.
"Michael is here to see you," replied Serus, who was a little
uncomfortable at the announcement.
"Michael? Well now, that is something," said Lucifer as he
made his way into the beautiful mansion. Michael had not come to
call for some time. Lucifer glanced at his reflection in a small mirror.
"It wouldn't do to keep the archangel waiting," he said, satis-
fied with his appearance. "I will receive him immediately."
"Yes, my lord," said Serus.
Lucifer followed Serus through his vast house, which was
richly endowed with beautifully crafted ornaments of gold, jewels
and crystal. His taste for things of exquisite beauty was well known
in the Kingdom. Colorful tapestries adorning the walls hailed the
Lord in various motifs as "Glorious," "Victorious," "Righteous,"
"Holy," etc. Ornate mirrors of various shapes and sizes hung on the
walls and the light from the North poured into the house, creating
an ever-present illuminance.
"Truly the Lord had marked him for great things." 11
The odor of flowers hung heavily in the house and beautiful
flowers were also represented in various art forms. Serus made
sure to fill the many vases with pungent blooms, and the extensive
gardens in the rear teemed with delicate blossoms. Lilacs were a
particular passion with Lucifer. He entered the audience chamber
where Michael stood waiting.
"Brother Michael," Lucifer said as he glided into the room and
grasped Michael's hands. "What a pleasant surprise!" They
embraced each other. "Or is it Lord Michael, now?" He smiled.
"Just Michael, my dear brother," Michael said with good
humor. "There is only one true Lord in Heaven."
"And a splendid arrangement at that," Lucifer agreed, look-
ing at the powerful angel who had entered his house.
The archangel Michael commanded respect from the entire
Host of Heaven. While Lucifer was a creature of unmatched beau-
ty, Michael was a warrior of virtue, with tremendous strength.
