“How did you like the spanking chair?”

I go to open my mouth but words don’t come out.

He’s given me another mind blowing experience as only he could, literally leaving me speechless.

The only thing I want in life is to spend the rest of it with him.

  CHAPTER 15

  Tamás

O ur last week together flies by. Next thing I know I’m at the airport picking up her father.

“Adam! Great to see you,” I say, giving him a hug. I’ve known the guy way too long and we’re way too close for just a handshake. He’s a brother to me and me to him.

“You look fresher than you have in years.”

“I feel lighter and a step quicker.”

“Being around all these kids will do that to you,” he says.

“The secret to staying young. I couldn’t agree more.”

But there was a lot more to it than just that, and it wasn’t just any kid, it was his kid.

Compared to when she arrived just a few months ago it would be realistic to look back at her then and see her as a kid. That’s how I had always known her, although now she was anything but.

She had come into her own as a young woman. She wore elegant women’s business suits to the office, worked on some of our most high profile campaigns, and was loved and respected by her colleagues just as much as she was by me. Scratch that, even though they admired her immensely it was no competition for what I felt about her. And I had to let it be known.

  CHAPTER 16

  Audrey

I was an emotional wreck all day. It was great to see my dad again after a summer abroad. He showered me with love and admiration like any proud papa would. He had seen some of my work over the course of the summer, because he had access to the company database of campaigns.

He sent me congratulatory emails and texts, but nothing beats a hug and a kiss on the cheek from dad in real life. Nothing except maybe him telling me how proud of me he was.

But how proud would he be if he found out everything I had been up to this summer? He wouldn’t be proud of a daughter who was sleeping with his best friend, although saying it that way didn’t even come close to the full scope of our wonderful relationship. The problem is that guys are guys and that’s the first thing they’ll think about…the fact that we’re having sex together.

It’s just with Tamás there is so much more. There’s the never-ending emotional support. There’s the belief in me I didn’t even have in myself, and all the self-confidence I’ve built thanks to his believing in me.

There’s the lifestyle he’s given me. There’s the late night walks in the city. And there are also the times he’s tough on me, which I really appreciate. When he pushes me to be the best I can be, and also when he recently pushed me sexually in his spanking chair. He’s helping me to grow in every way possible. There is no way I can replace what he’s giving to my life, nor would I want to.

It’s time to go back, but I’m just not ready. Not now, and really not ever. Not unless he goes back with me. I have to finish college, but I don’t know how that can happen with us so far apart. How will I focus on my courses, when my mind will only want to focus on him?

My stomach is in knots and when the waiter brings our dishes I aimlessly poke at my food.

“Are you okay?” Tina asks, after I’ve barely eaten a third of my meal.

“Yeah, just not so hungry today.”

  “That’s not like you.”

“Maybe just all the excitement,” I say, but I know it’s really the idea of the lack of excitement that will soon become my life that’s bothering me. What will happen once that spark in my life is gone, even if it’s only temporarily? The thought of it is the worst, and I can’t think of anything else.

We finish our meals, and afterwards Tamás says he has a surprise for us. Knowing Tamás when he has a surprise in store it’s going to be grandiose.

“Enjoy your meal?” the man in the elevator asks, placing his finger next to the ground floor button. Just as he’s about to press, Tamás’ finger calmly shoots in and hits the number next to the top floor. “It was excellent, thank you.”

The man gives him a strange look.

“We’re going to grab some air up top,” he says.

“But sir, that area is off limits. You’d need…”

Tamás raises a key from his pocket.

  “I see, sir. Certainly.”

We exit the elevator and open the door to the roof.

Little did we know when Tamás said “some air” that he meant the wind from the blades of a helicopter.

We climb inside and next thing I know we’re hovering above the city skyline.

We have on communication equipment, but no one’s talking. It’s just too beautiful. I turn my head even more towards the glass as a tear streams down my cheek. I don’t want anyone to see and I don’t want to give this all up. I can’t give this all up. All I want is to be here with him, and that’s exactly what’s not going to happen.

  CHAPTER 17

  Audrey

A bout an hour later the helicopter returns us to the rooftop. We’re down to the first floor and out onto the street in no time. I turn the corner towards where the car is parked, but Tamás motions toward the other direction.

“I thought we could all take a walk. It’s a beautiful night.”

“Dad, it’s getting late,” Tina says.

“You’re right. That’s exactly why we need to take a walk.”

I process his words and draw a blank. Tamás makes a living based on the words he chooses, so I know he wouldn’t waste any or choose the wrong ones. I can’t process his cryptic message no matter how hard I try.

We walk through some side streets before coming up to the start of the Chain Bridge.

“One of your daughter’s favorite places in the entire city,” Tamás says to my dad, as he winks at me.

I smile thinking what he asked me last time we were here, and wonder what question he has prepared for tonight.

We walk out onto the bridge, and I’m glad we’ve picked this late hour to cross. There’s literally no one out. I stop for a second.

“Everything okay?” my dad says, turning back to look at me.

“Yeah, it’s just that I walk this bridge as often as I can and I’ve never seen it totally empty like this. Never once, day or night.”

I lean forward a little and squint, trying to see the end of the bridge.

“Maybe something’s going on. Maybe it’s closed for cars tonight. Repairs or something.”

I turn back around and look towards the side we came. Then I see it. There’s a man there blocking all traffic…car and foot.

I turn back around and there Tamás is, right in front of me.

“Most people may not be aware that Buda and Pest are two separate cities. It’s this Chain Bridge that was the first to connect them. To bring east and west together.”

  What is he up to?

“I find it fascinating that of all the wonderful things in this country to enjoy, it’s this bridge that you enjoy the most,” he says, looking me in the eye. “This bridge that has bonded east, like me, and west, like you, together for a long, long time, and will continue to until the end of time.”

Tamás kneels down and I feel myself getting light headed from all the air off the river and what I can’t believe is about to happen.

My father’s arm wraps around mine and he holds me up. “I’m okay,” I say regaining my footing.

“Audrey, I’ve contacted the college you attend. I asked them if you could complete your education through their distance-learning program. They said yes. I spoke with your father this afternoon and asked him if he would give his daughter away to me in the biggest and most beautiful wedding this city has ever seen. He said yes. They say the third time’s a charm and it’s that third yes that I want the most. That third yes that I need to make my life complete, perfect, and most importantly joined together forever wi
th you.”

I’m literally shaking as my hands come up to meet my face.

“Audrey, the absolute love of my life, and the only girl in the world for me. The one who has made me feel unlike I ever have since the very first moment she arrived in my life earlier this summer. Beautiful…will you marry me?”

He opens a small black box, and I may be no professional, but under the streetlight the diamond looks pinkish…and absolutely huge.

“Yes!” I say and jump into the air. I’m like a kid in a candy store and all the candy in the world is mine when he’s there with me. And now that we’re engaged that’s exactly where he’s going to be forever…right by my side, and me by his.

  EPILOGUE

  Audrey

  One month later

K nock, knock,” he says tapping on the doorjamb of my old castle bedroom. “How’s the studying going?”

I exhale hard. “Good, but it’s the perfect time for a break.”

I stand up and stretch, and he comes to me and hugs me tight.

“It was a great idea to turn my old room into a study room. It’s so easy to focus in here. The walls are thick, not that I need it though. It’s so peaceful inside your home.”

  “You mean our home.”

  “I still can’t believe it.”

“Believe it. And the best part is that you’re going to finish your degree on time, and when you do we can look into some of those additions and improvements to the property we talked about.”

“I can’t wait. Not just to put some creative touches on the castle, but also to finish up my studies. I’m so lucky you were able to convince them to let me study abroad, and that they’re willing to give me credit for the responsibilities that come with my part-time position at Pest Publishing.”

“I think I get the better end of that deal. The most amazing young up and coming advertising rep in the entire world.”

“Awww. Thank you.” He always says the nicest things. His support means the world to me. “How’s Tina?”

“She’s good. I just had a quick video chat with her. She’s having a great time in Singapore. She sends her regards.”

  “Is she cool with everything?”

“She mentioned before I proposed to you that she saw you as a sister, so she’s going to be all right.”

“But I’m not exactly going to be her sister when all the dust settles.”

“True, but while the titles may be a little different your relationship will be the same. Two girls who enjoy each other’s company and get along just like sisters do…without any fighting, jealousy, or any of the potentially pitfalls.”

“That’s true. She’s an amazing person. I just hope she comes to see you and I how she did before the proposal. Just a couple of crazy kids in love.”

“She will. I think she’s still a little bit in shock, but she’s handling it pretty well. It’s mostly just in her head and a case of human perception. Once she sees we’re still the same two people, just officially in love, she’ll realize her initial reaction was overblown.”

“More like blown over,” I say, referring to her passing out on the bridge a few moments after I accepted Tamás’ proposal.

“Yeah, it was like the wind just caught her and took her right over.”

“Luckily my dad has quick hands.”

“And an even quicker ability to adapt.”

  “But he had some time.”

“True. I was surprised when he told me he figured it out. He noticed a change in you just through the tone of your emails and your calls with him. He knew something was up, and when he saw my mind wandering on our investor conference calls he figured it out.”

  “But he never got angry.”

“That’s the kind of guy your dad is. He’s a great guy, and also easy going. He knows it’s your decision and he respects and trusts you. I’m just glad he felt the same way about me.”

  “How could he feel otherwise?”

“Well, he is my best friend, but pursuing his daughter could have definitely tested our relationship.”

“But I pursued you just as much.”

“Maybe, but I was so laser focused on you, I felt like the hunter.”

“And you were, and I was more than happy to be caught.”

“And speaking of being caught, we have to get going if we’re going to catch the sunset.”

“Oh! The sunset tonight would be perfect. Where should we catch it from?”

“Well, I did promise you we’d return to Gellért Hill, and tonight is as good as any to keep that promise.”

“You remembered!” I say, hugging him.

“I never make a promise I can’t keep, especially when it comes to you.”

“And I never make a promise to you I can’t keep.”

“And that’s just one of the reasons I promise to love you forever.”

“And forever is almost as long as I promise to love you.”

  “Almost?”

  “Almost.”

  “Why’s that?”

“Because I promise to love you forever, and ever and ever.”

  “Forever ever?”

  “Forever ever.”

He leans down and kisses me.

“Great, because when I’m with you it’s like time stands still,” he says.

  “Same with me.”

“So forever is going to be a really, really, really long time. And I’m in no hurry.”

  “Neither am I.”

“But I am in a hurry to walk you down that aisle. I even laid out some choices while you were studying.”

  “Oh! Tell me!”

“We’ll pick together, as a team. But first, let’s catch that sunset.”

  “As a team,” I say.

  “Forever,” he says.

  “And ever and ever.”
