I nodded. “No problem. Meek as a kitten.”
The nurse switched off the pumps and did something with the IV so I could be moved, then pushed the narrow bed through the door and down the hall. I laid my head back and stared up at her face as we went, ignoring the sounds around me. People crying, people watching television, people laughing as they cheered each other up. An odd sense of nostalgia for what felt like a lifetime ago, even if it was just a few weeks, overcame me. I wanted to lounge and sip a beer while I observed them. It would be nice to partake in their little joys and pains, sampling each of them to give me the smallest taste of the life I had lost with my family.
I didn’t look. I tried to block them out as much as possible. Maybe someday there would be time for that again, but not right now.
One elevator ride and several impacts of the bed against corners later, we were outside the MRI suite. The police officer removed my handcuff and turned to the nurse. “You want me to come in there? He’s a dangerous guy.”
“No thanks,” the nurse said. “Technically I couldn’t let you anyway. Privacy regulations. There’s a waiting area around the corner. Has coffee. This should take about twenty, thirty minutes.”
The cop nodded. “Okay, you just holler at me if he gives you any trouble.”
“Will do.” The nurse looked down at me as we went into the MRI room. “You gonna give me any trouble, mister?”
I looked up at her and smiled. “No, Jen. No trouble at all.”
