We were the true definition of hood love. I’d tested the weight of her heart. The cussin’ and screamin’ had been nonstop. But, when so many times my back was against the wall, she was the only one there ‘til the end, so I couldn’t let her go.
Victoria
I probably shouldn’t have laughed when I opened the door and saw Tricey and Ariana standing there. But I couldn’t help it. Tricey had been at my doorstep more in the last month than she had since we were little and lived around the corner from one another.
“This shit ain’t funny,” she fussed.
She stomped through the front door and Ariana followed. Ariana was a little over two years old by now. The older she got, the more her face transformed into Ameil’s identical twin. She had Tricey’s fat cheeks though.
“Is your man here?”
“No, he isn’t. He’s at work.”
It had been almost four weeks since Taij left Kim at the altar to rekindle our relationship. But it was still funny to hear him being referred to as my man.
“Oh. Good. I’m not interrupting then,” Tricey said and then got comfortable on the couch.
“What happened?”
I knew something had happened. Tricey and Blood’s home was turning into a battle field. Every other day Tricey was upset about something. It had gotten to the point that she simply didn’t trust Blood anymore and she was not one to hide her disgust with having to raise Mauri.
“You wouldn’t fucking believe it!” Tricey was fuming as she handed Ariana a bag of cookies out of her Gucci bag. “Taleyi showed up at my fucking house!”
“Ooooo,” was all that I could say as I covered my mouth in shock.
“Gawd damn right, oooo! I am so sick him and his shit! Gawd damn! I just want some peace!”
“What did she say?”
“She wants her baby. And by the looks of her labels, she can afford to take care of his ass, so I wanna know the real reason why he’s here!”
“Did you ask her?”
“No, because at the time, the whole ordeal was so crazy that it was funny to me. So I just left. That is his baby mama and his problem. He can fix that shit. Fuck him.”
I didn’t know what to say, so I just shook my head in disbelief.
“Anyway, I didn’t come over here for that.” Then she took a deep breath and looked at me funny. Right then, I knew where this was going. “You gotta talk to Lyric.”
“Urgh,” I grimaced and flopped back on the couch.
“For real, Vic!”
I still hadn’t returned Lyric’s calls, text messages, Facebook inbox messages, emails and even mentions on Twitter. I was insulted by her reaching out to me. She spent years dogging me and ignoring me. Now that we were so called sisters, she wanted to kiss my ass.
Tricey noticed my hesitation and began to beg. “Vic, neither of you has siblings. It’s time to hash things out and fix this.”
“She might not even be my sister.”
“Even more of a reason to talk to her! You need to get a DNA test.”
I rolled my eyes and started to protest, but Tricey interrupted me. “I know you’re scared of finding out. I know, Vic. But it’s time, sweetie. You need to know.”
Just the thought of knowing whether or not Teddy was my father made my heart race. If he was, I would be sad because I wasted thirty years of life not getting to know this man. No matter his addictions, I wondered how different life would have been for me having him as my father, rather than a child abuser and molester. But, if he wasn’t my father, the same dread would be there because there would still be so many unanswered questions.
“Okay. Fine.” But, it was time to face this like a big girl. “I’ll talk to her.”
