The Chesapeake Bride Page 29

by Mariah Stewart

The house Owen and Cass will live in won’t be ready for them until early February, which is fine because they still have Alec’s house in town. My brother Clifford’s house has sheltered many a searching soul over the years—Clifford’s included. Cass and Owen are only the latest, and I know there’s another who’ll be staying under its welcoming roof by and by.

I don’t know that anyone was happier than Ruby at Owen and Cass’s wedding. She’d been worried about her boy for so long—she’d confided in me once that she feared he’d be off on a jaunt when his destiny arrived on the island. It remains to be seen whether she had anything to do with his returning at just the right time to meet Cass. Let’s face it—Ruby’s not above occasionally taking matters into her own very capable hands. Not that I would ever ask, of course.

It’s no secret that Cass is a favorite of mine. She’s breathed new life into Cannonball Island, preserved much of what might have been lost in the not-too-distant future. That she is talented and beautiful and has such a sensitive heart—well, one must say Owen certainly hit the jackpot when he met her.

So for Ruby—and her Kathleen, of course—there were two weddings in the family, two joyous events last year. Within the next eighteen months there will be more good news to rejoice in when their family grows. I see—and I know Ruby does as well—and I could not be happier.

We had tea this afternoon in the conservatory—it’s too cold to have it on the veranda—and Cass brought both Owen’s cousin Chrissie, Cass’s own cousin Jane, and a friend of Cass’s from college.

One of them is destined to be the next Chesapeake bride, but that’s all I have to say about that~
