Pindar—a soldier of the Bloodclad
Poison Greens—the mountains north of Calle Valley, considered impassable
Polontis (po LAWN tis)—province northeast of Lystra, home of the Polonti (po LAWN tee)
Qarqar (KAR kar)—the province northwest of Lystra, which exported mostly ore
Quint—a Lystran soldier who posed as a renegade to track down the source of frequent attacks on travelers
Reuel (rule)—a captain in the Lystran army
Rollet (rawl LET)—Tremaine’s son, a former suitor of Deirdre who was killed by Roman’s men in Corona
Roman—the Surchatain of Lystra upon the death of Galapos; a half-blooded Polonti who was the Chataine Deirdre’s personal guardian until their marriage
royal(s)—a coin used throughout the Continent which was supposed to contain 10 percent gold, but seldom did (with the exception of the coins minted during Roman’s reign); one royal equaled fifty silver pieces.
Sebastian—a Lystran soldier who rescued Basil from the hanging rope
Seir (SEE er)—the province northwest of Lystra, ruled by Corneus before it was annexed by Roman
Seleca (SEL e ka)—the province north of Lystra, once ruled by the mighty Tremaine
Sevter—palace overseer at Westford, formerly the overseer of domestic slaves at Diamond’s Head
Sheva—widow of Savin who ruled Goerge until she was killed in an attempted overthrow by her soldiers
sigil (SIJ il)—a design having occultic significance
Surchatain (SUR cha tan)—title for the ruler of a province; feminine—Surchataine (SUR cha tane)
Tarl—Captain of the Ninth Unit of the Selecan army (the Bloodclad)
Teaching Room—Tremelaine’s torture room in the palace of Corona
Thane—a renegade who attached himself to Roman
Titan—the head cook at Corona whom Roman made Surchatain of Seleca
Tremaine (tre MANE)—powerful ruler of Seleca who died of disease while sieging Outpost One
Tremelaine (TREM el ane)—the name Galen used after becoming entranced with Tremaine and assuming power in Corona; a sorcerer like his brother Graydon
Troyce—palace administrator at Westford who had formerly been administrator at Diamond’s Head
Tuss—a kitchen servant at the palace of Corona
Varela (va REL a)—a witch who had attempted to destroy Roman and Lystra; she vanished mysteriously after Roman determined to confront her
Vernard—one of two scouts sent to Corona to gather information before Roman went there to face Tremelaine
Vida (VEE da)—Orvis the tailor’s wife; a woman of courage who aided Roman and Deirdre
Village Branch—a branch of the Passage where the slums of Westford were located
Virl—an emissary of Calle Valley
wainwright—a wagon maker
Wence—a Polonti noted for his size and strength who served in the Lystran army
Westford—capital of Lystra, where Roman and Deirdre ruled
