Chapter 16
Escape the Doubt - Book 1 in the Shifting Series
By Andrea Michelle
Synopsis: Is taking a chance with your heart worth the escape, or was it better to have never loved at all? Can forgiveness really set you free?
After the unexpected death of her Dad, and the haunting manner in which he died, Riley Shaw built invisible walls around her heart. Barriers she created to protect her from splintering into broken pieces that couldn’t be repaired. She was unable to move forward from her past, letting the guilt of her parent’s mistakes dictate her own choices.
Dean Warren was safe. Being with him was innocent and peaceful because she didn’t truly love him. His words held her captive in a false sense of security. His eyes were deceptive, and his promises of never pushing her beyond what she was willing to give were broken, leaving Riley in a state of regret and doubt.
Joshua Parker had the power to take what was left of Riley’s splintered pieces and ruin her completely, or make her whole again. He was her best friend, her next-door neighbor—everything she wanted and settled on never having. Loving him was as easy as breathing air. The fear of losing him forever was more real to her than the feelings she couldn’t escape.
When faced with the very thing she feared the most, and in the arms she thought were safe, Riley finds herself questioning every decision she has made over the past two years. When she finally escapes the doubt in her head, and accepts the truth in her heart, is it too late?
“I'm so close to the edge of the cliff that I know one more breath, one more inch, I could fall.” -Riley Shaw
Not recommended for anyone under the age of 17 due to underage drinking, sexual content and adult language.
*Warning* - This is book one in a series and is not a stand-alone novel.
Questions: (From readers to the author)
1.) Why does Riley stay with Dean so long, if she doesn’t love him?
2.) Riley is afraid of love because of her father’s affair, but it’s obvious to readers that she loves Josh. Why is she afraid to love him when his love is the truest she’s ever known?
3.) Riley’s parents had a rocky marriage after his infidelity. They never divorced because of the children. Do you think this is true for many families, and is it truly what is best for the children?
4.) Riley turns to alcohol to numb the pain and shut off feeling. Where does this reaction come from in someone so young?
5.) Will Riley’s dark poetry ever lead her back to her roots—to the music? Will it become cathartic enough for her to heal her broken heart?
6.) Josh spent two years watching Riley and Dean date. Why didn’t he tell her the truth about his feelings?
7.) Josh had a reputation at school for being a bad boy and a bang-em-leave-em type. He knew they were rumors, but Riley didn’t. Why didn’t he ever clear his record and his name?
8.) What is Josh’s true passion—football or music?
9.) Was there ever a moment where Josh was angry with Riley’s family after the accident?
10.) Why did Josh kiss Preslee? Was that a show because the guys were watching and he had a reputation to uphold, or did he kiss her because he wanted to?

Riley and Josh have been through it all together, first as best friends and now as a couple.

With the past creeping into their present, and miles between them, they learn nothing is easy. Every moment matters.
Can Riley and Josh survive the first year of college apart? Will their love remain strong enough to embrace every moment that belongs to them? Or will someone from the past interfere, take what he wants and ruin them forever?
"For each star in the sky, I have a reason why I love you. When you look up at night, never forget this truth." ~Josh Park

Not recommended for anyone under the age of 17 due to underage drinking, sexual content and adult language.
*Warning* This is book two in the series. I strongly encourage reading the books in order to better understand the characters and the storyline. This is not a stand-alone novel.
**Questions: (From readers to the author)
1.) Why is Dean so obsessed with Riley? He spent years cheating on her. Why then does he spend so much time chasing what he had and lost?
2.) How did Riley not know Josh signed a national letter of intent out of state? Why did he keep that truth from her?
3.) Josh’s dad and Riley’s mom are spending a lot of time together. Is this a blossoming relationship? If so, what does this mean for Josh and Riley?
4.) Josh and Riley are less innocent in this book and grabbing moments before they slip away. Do you think this is true for a lot of high school relationships before college takes them to separate places?
5.) Riley and her mom seemed to be healing when an unexpected surprise halts their progress. Will this surprise ruin everything, or will time heal all wounds?
6.) Riley finds comfort in music, in singing. Is this a sign of what’s to come?

9.) Will Collin and Emily get their own book?
10.) Will Josh and Riley get an HEA?

MJ Nightingale
I am a wife, mom, and teacher. I have been teaching for quite a long time, twenty two years in fact. I have taught English, History, Art, Math, Science and whatever courses I am asked to do. I prefer to teach History and English. I graduated from University in Canada with a Bachelors of Arts degree majoring in English, and honoring in American History. I also went on to get my Bachelors of Education Degree in Secondary Education.
Reading has been a part of my life since I was a child. My first book that I can remember was the Velveteen Rabbit at five years old. I devoured the book on Christmas day and read it countless times afterwards so that the book was just as tattered as the rabbit in the story. I had found my love, reading and escape. As I grew into my teenage years it was romance that captured my heart, and although I have read vociferously of the classics, I always return to romance. I am an avid lover of classical English and American literature, but romance has always held a special place in my heart. I devour romance novels all summer long, and any type of fiction; thrillers, crime, suspense, and drama. I published some poetry while in college and even wrote a song that was picked up by a local group. I still on occasion write poetry. I also have several short stories as well. I am working on a collection of short stories that deal with the new family dynamics in the current age.
I have also taught Creative Writing to high school students for over fifteen years, several who have gone on to publish works of their own. I decided to write my own books two years ago when a friend encouraged me to do so. It has always been my dream to write. I hope to retire soon, and just write. I would love to be home with my children and have the time to help, and support them as they go through school. I want to be one of those moms.
I live in Florida, and continue to teach, with my wonderful husband, and my two sons. The Secrets & Seduction Series is a trilogy of standalone books all focusing on the same theme. They are erotic romance novels and intended for a mature audience. I have a new series planned for 2015 entitled the Bounty Hunters. I hope you give my books a chance, and help to make my dreams come true. I would love to hear from you.

Maryann Jordan
Maryann Jordan is an avid reader of romance novels, often joking that she cut her teeth on the old bodice rippers. She has been reading and reviewing for years. In 2013,she created the blog, Lost in Romance Books to promote and showcase indie authors. In 2014, she finally gave in to the characters in her head, screaming for their story to be told. From these musings her first novel, Emma’s Home, The Fairfield Series Book 1 was born.
She is a high school counselor having worked in education for thirty years. She lives in Virginia, having also lived in four states and two foreign countries. She has been married to a wonderfully patient man for thirty two years and is the mother of two adult daughters. When writing, her dog or one of her four cats can generally be found in the same room if not on her lap.
Please take time to leave a review of this book (on Goodreads, Amazon). Reviews are the lifeline for indie authors.
Feel free to contact her, especially if you enjoyed her book. She loves to hear from readers!

A.D. Ellis
A.D Ellis was born and raised in a small farming town in southern Indiana. An avid reader from the time she learned to read, A.D. could often be found curled up somewhere with her nose in a book. Most of her friends and family were not such book enthusiasts, so A.D. got used to dealing with snickers and joking comments about her constant reading habits.
A.D. had always dreamed of being a teacher. She earned her degree in Elementary Education from Indiana State University in 1999 and her Master’s Degree from Indiana Wesleyan in 2003. A.D. has been teaching in the inner city of Indianapolis for 15 years. While she’s taught several different grades, fourth grade is where she’s spent the most time; a move to third grade alternative education is on the horizon though. A.D. loves teaching fractions, variables, probability, and graphing in Math. She loves almost all aspects of English Language Arts. Figurative language, theme, making predictions, drawing conclusions, inference, context clues, making writing come to life, A.D. loves it all! Her students may not be as on board with that excitement.
A.D. met her husband in college in 1996 and they married in June of 2000. She lives in a southside suburb of Indianapolis, Indiana with her husband and two school-aged children. When she’s not reading or writing with music blaring, she can be found shopping at thrift stores, reading to her children, and running.
A.D. had always pondered the i
dea of writing a book, but until recently it was a far off dream. In today’s age of independently published authors, A.D. decided to take a chance and try her hand at writing. She has learned so much during this journey and is having a world of fun with it.
